#1 - the original all those years ago was one thing. Your reprise, though well executed, something less.

We have this lens and it is very nice, glad we have it.

We all everybody have it ... allowing for some minor variations, usually cylindrical with glass windows on both ends. And as you remarked, it really is very nice.

I'll echo some comments. Not all L lenses are great, especially among the zooms. If you don't want to pony up for a great one like the 24-70 2.8 II, then the primes are a better option as others have pointed out. The 35 2.0
IS has been called a 'hidden gem" by some pros. I have one and use it a lot. It's very versatile. I have a 5D IV but often use a 77D for long hikes and climbs to save weight. One of my favorites for this is the 40 pancake. It makes beautiful images and is surprisingly versatile. If you really have an itch for an L, consider the discontinued 70-200 f/4 IS. I think it brings 500. or so used. The two knocks on it are it is noisy and the AF struggles in tough conditions. However, it is extremely sharp. I took a lot of great images with mine but I did replace it with version II which corrected the weaknesses.

The 17-40 is a great lens. Mine has been in my Arsenal for a very long time. Like Paul said, on a crop sensor like the 7D II it’s a great walk around set up.

If you are looking for around 50mm on your crop body you might take a look at the 40mm pancake lens. It is very small and very sharp edge to edge. It is also around $200 or less new. My daughter has one I gave her. I have a 24-70II f2.8 so I didn’t need it. And it looks ridiculous on my 1D body...

Yes several people have mentioned the 40mm. I have decided to stick with my 18-135 for now but if I do go for something I will look into the 40mm. It sounds good, and the price is right.
Thank you for your input.

You know the more I ponder this, the more I’m thinking, I’m over thinking. I like what I get out of my 18-135. And if there isn’t a marked improvement in getting a shorter zoom or one of the fixed lenses mentioned then it’s just a GAS issue. But I’m glad I asked. And appreciate all the input.

IMHO, any input from chg canon is worth it's weight in gold. That dude knows what he's talking about. I've shot Canon digital for a dozen years or so and whenever I read one of his posts, I most always learn something!

PS And I started with a Nikon 35mm over 50 years ago so I didn't just fall off the d^mn turnip truck. <g>

You are absolutely correct Harry. Paul is like having the encyclopedia Britannica for photography at your fingertips.

Then I guess the question is what exactly does input weigh...😳😎

The 40 isn’t actually the culprit when it comes to ridiculousness. No version of “camera-in-front-of-face” ever escapes looking ridiculous, acoarst some worse than others. The more massive is the machinery, then the more ridiculous is the effect. In that sense, the miniature 40 is hardly to blame.

Whatever ... I really do looooove my pancakes, any time of day or night ! Always room for one more ;-)

Compelling comments for the pancakes. Do they come in blueberry? :)

We'll have to agree to disagree in this one...
