I just purchased this item at Barnes and Noble for $15.00. It operates on USB power, has its own tripod but is also tapped for a 1/4” 20 tripod screw and the center opening a is larger than my largest Nikkor lens.

Hi, Assuming it is a continuous light source, find a friend with a color temperature meter. Take readings for all 3 power settings. It's entirely possible each setting may have a different 'apparent'color temp.

Some digital cameras capture the degrees Kelvin color temperature information with each picture. You need a software package that lets you see this info.

Or you could just never worry about any of that stuff. Toys are meant to be fun !

So why is the phone not in the center? I thought the idea behind a ring light is that the light source surrounds the lens.

Being an LED light, when on AC power it is not continuous like tungsten, so it "can" flicker. If your camera has an anti-flicker mode, I'd suggest using it. On battery power it should not be an issue. The bigger concern is color consistency at different power levels, and as the battery becomes depleted. You don't need a color temperature meter, but a color profile creator, like an Xrite ColorChecker Passport may prove indispensable. I'm curious to see how you make out with it over time. I am most interested in how you like the flat quality of the light that you'll get when you place your lens in the "donut hole."
