I have a Kindle Fire...50 bucks. I bought it a couple of months ago, and signed up for BookBub.com. Most books are $.99 cents. I read daily.

The Fire (in any size/variation) is not a Kindle. It is a tablet wearing the Kindle name to make it more saleable. It is Amazon's version of an iPad. They are great devices and excellent as tablets. But they are not at all the same as an ereader. And I don't say this lightly. I have a Fire Tablet for when I want to do tablet things. And I even have the Kindle app in it for just in case I unexpectedly need/want to read for a few minutes and didn't bring my real Kindle along. But the reading experience is definitely different and definitely better in a real Kindle.

I have had the least expensive Kindle I could buy for the last ten years and love it. Don't pay extras for bells and whistles. Just read and enjoy.

The higher resolution, about 80% better, isn't just a bell or a whistle. Combine that with the better lighting and it's a definite improvement, not just a fancy automatic nose scratcher bell and whistle. If the base model suits one's needs then it is great. But don't automatically discount the higher models as useless upgrades. I've owned both models and side by side the difference is very significant.

I love to read, but was tired of all the books piling up. My kids bought me one of the original Kindles for Xmas many years ago. Loved it. On my second Kindle fire now but, you can can download an app on many devices, including your phone. Read anywhere, anytime. I also suggest signing up for bookbub.com. Lots of free and/or highly reduced. Only pay full price for the ones you really want to read.

If you have an Amazon account and really want a Kindle, I suggest you check out woot.com. It's Amazon's clearance site. All of your same info applies. If you have Prime, the free shipping applies. No difference, except bargain prices. Recently they had older and reconditioned Kindles for as low as 20.00. Not kidding. They also have camera gear. But, you have to act fast. It disappears quick. I've gotten some great deals.

I have two kindles. A kindle 2 and a paper white. Paper white is back lit so good for reading in bed. I can check out kindle books from the local library on line and get books from my Amazon Prime subscription.

Lots of free classics just for down loading available. I have everything from engineering text books. The classics. Operator manuals and hundreds of popular novels on my kindle. Not to mention quite a collection of reference books dictionaries etc.

Always in my brief case, hunting pack suite case etc.

I agree. A fire tablet is just a tablet. Any of them will do with the Kindle app. They have their place. You can't read outside. Totally sucks. But, you can read in bed. Falls asleep when you do. Can't do that with an E-reader without a light on.

My first was the Kindle 3G. Still works but, the battery doesn't hold a charge long. I now have Kindle paperwhite? Can read outside on the deck while grilling a burger and sipping on a beer.

Both are great. Just depends on what your purpose is.

I haven't read all of the posts so if I repeat what others have told you just ignore this. I read my Kindle books on my PC. I simply downloaded a free Kindle app from the play store. The app I downloaded also allows me to read books that are in other formats as well. Kindle is proprietary to Amazon. There are also many sites on the net that let you download or borrow books for free. I like the "Internet Archive" which as the name implies is a repository for books, movies, etc. from all over the world. The interface takes some getting used to, but the content is totally free. Some books can be "borrowed" for an hour at a time, others are available for complete download. I'm sure others may have advised you to get a tablet as books are easier to read on a tablet. They are cheap enough new and many times you may find used ones on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace. Hope my comments help.

Not true of the current Kindles. You can read anywhere and don't need a light on. They have front lighting which is smoother and more even. After a few minutes of inactivity they go to sleep. I'm not positive about the latest base model Kindle. I think it does the same but don't own one and can't confirm.

Yeah, I see some are now lit. But, not cheap. Didn't pay anywhere near that for the 2 I have.

Before purchasing a new device, check with you library system and see if it offers audio books to check out and download to you smart phone. Our library (Kent, WA) offered a link to an app called Libby. Then I can search the library for audio books and download the book for 21 days.

You can put a book on Hold if its not available and receive notice when it becomes available. I probably listen to 2 books per week this way. It is amazing.

I was doing audio books when I was working. I just downloaded them to my MP3 player and later as MP3 to mo phone. Since I retired I still keep am audio book on the phone for traveling but that is not as important as it once was. I am not making the daily 30 min to hour commute.

I can take the kindle to the deer stand and read until it gets light enough to see. I can turn the back light down so there is just enough light to read and it does not spook the deer. I read 30 minutes when I get into bed. It allows me to settle down then I turn it off and go to sleep. It will turn off If I I stop reading. The battery lasts forever. My kindle 2 still works. I did order and change the battery five years ago. Not that difficult to do and it was cheap.

I had a couple of hundred books to read a year ago and now my library is getting pretty slim. Our local library isn't open so buying used books there or borrowing isn't an option. I thought about Kindle and wondered just what they're all about and if any of you have Kindles and what model. There seems to be quite a choice and I looked at the PaperWhite, but some reviews said that it had screen glare. I'd like an 8GB as I don't think I need storage capacity for 15,000 books with the 32GB. Do any of you out there have Kindles and what do you like or dislike about the different models available? And can you download books from your local library with a Kindle?

I have used a Kindle for many years to download and read books. My current "library" has over 4,000 books on a variety of subjects. Personally, I use the color version rather than the paperwhite version. It provides the ability to surf the web, do emails, view pictures, take photos, etc., just like a tablet does.

Check out thiswebiste for hundreds of free, and other very cheap to purchase, Kindle books:
https://www.freereadfeed.com

The selections change everyday. They have a search function as well as filters to limit the available selections to your favorite genres.

There are no color Kindles. There are color tablets which Amazon has named Kindle Fire rather than just Fire. That is not at all the same as a Kindle. They are great as tablets and they do many more things than a Kindle will do like color, online, music, photos etc. but for pure reading they max out around 6-7 on the scale of a Kindle Oasis being a 10.

Best Buy usually carries them.
