I have both the VR II and the FL lenses. As you already know, the FL is the better of the two, however, in practice, I can hardly tell the difference. They are both fast, accurate, and sharp where it counts. Personally, I think you would get a heck of a deal getting an excellent condition VR II for $900. That's the way I'd go.

The difference was the Tamron G2 was sharper. The focus was really fast and the build quality was excellent. I’m not saying the Nikon was not also excellent but the Tamron was just sharper.

I got my 70-200 2.8 ll used for $550 but I don’t know if I got just lucky. I hear about focus breathing and Weight difference....vs the new ones. For me it’s a solid good lens what I bought out the pawn shop without reading reviews(eBay is great for equipment failures😉) and this in less than 10 minutes. I would take the $300 and invest in pol-ND filters .....good luck with your Decision

I have the Nikon Nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 G II ED lens. It is the best lens that I have ever bought!! I use it for sports photography. It cost over $2,000 maybe 10 years ago. If that is the $899 lens you are referring to, stop reading this note right now and go and buy it!!

Cold water!

I went to dxomark.com to see which lenses were the sharpest for my D800e and D850 cameras. To do the same, click on a sort of results based on 'sharpness'. The Nikon 70-200 f/4 was sharper than the f/2.8 Nikkor lens. I bought the f/4.0 and never looked back. Extremely sharp for these high megapixel cameras. I enjoyed my 80-200 f/4.0 until I bought my Nikon 200-500 zoom. And now this new 200-500 lens is mounted on my camera for birding, etc. as my first choice. The others are in my backpack, if needed. (Truth is, rarely needed.)
