I had a couple of hundred books to read a year ago and now my library is getting pretty slim. Our local library isn't open so buying used books there or borrowing isn't an option. I thought about Kindle and wondered just what they're all about and if any of you have Kindles and what model. There seems to be quite a choice and I looked at the PaperWhite, but some reviews said that it had screen glare. I'd like an 8GB as I don't think I need storage capacity for 15,000 books with the 32GB. Do any of you out there have Kindles and what do you like or dislike about the different models available? And can you download books from your local library with a Kindle?

I download books from my library and go through a book about every five to six days. The books are free and I download them to my phone. I listen to them as Audio Books. There is a choice as to which way you want to receive the downloads, either audio or visual. The app on my phone is Libby. I like this app as you can tag books you may want to read at some point and put them on your bookshelf. This can save time in looking through the entire list. Also if you like a particular author, you can find all the books available by them. It also offers a 4 min. preview you can listen to (or read) and if you don't like the reader, you can eliminate that choice. I tend to go away from books read by women because their softer voice tends to put me to sleep. I have run across a couple that have a good commanding voice which can be listened to better. The service also has a star rating for the books which helps in finding the most accepted stories. It also shows when you returned a book so you can keep up with what books you've read or listened to. At times there is a waiting list and you can ask to be notified when the book you are wanting becomes available. Good luck with finding what you seek!

Since being virtually housebound and my local library closed to regular check out bring home activity I got the Kindle app on my laptop. I have been a library rat for over 70 of my 83 years and I find the whole Kindle experience to be wonderful. I can browse to my hearts content and never leave home. I can resize the print or even change the angle or the brightness of the screen. All this available at a very acceptable cost (I purchase the books I can't find to check out) and by dealing mostly with local folks known to me. Bravo Kindle

I have Amazon for books. Transfer was transferring purchases to my iPad. Not the greatest to read books on
and the iPad was pricey to use this way. Then decided i wanted a reader and personal music device.
Amazon had a sale of the Fire 10 pad for $79 I think which I think is best to read from. More flexible in size and color of in wide screen. Music is fine low not great speaker but for me fine. It is different but still a serious
pad. Don't know price but they are upgrading so this one is going out. I have grown to like it. Good luck.

Thank you all for your input. Believe me, I read every one of your posts twice as there is no better research than other folks experiences. I've decided on the 32GB Paperwhite 10th generation without ads which will be shipped a a few days. If I wanted any color other than black without ads, I'd have to wait 6-8 wks. Sounds like Henry Ford with his early Model Ts. I decided on the 32GB because audio books apparently require more space and at 78, I don't know how long the old peepers will last, so audio is a good alternative. You all can always be counted on for unbiased, logical opinions. Thanks again

I bought a Paperwhite and have no complaints. It's very convenient since I can carry it anywhere that I have to sit and wait for someone else or an appointment. I can't imagine why anyone thought there was a glare from it. In addition to the Paperwhite I have a Kindle app on my computer, so I can access and read anything in my Kindle library there as well.

I'm on my 4th Kindle, a Paper White and I love it. It goes wherever I go and, especially when I travel. The Kindle library is huge. You can buy books and store them in your Kindle library and download at your leisure. My mother, a frustrated school teacher taught me to read and my 5th birthday present was a trip to the library for a library card. My first Kindle was a birthday gift from my wife.

There’s already four pages of replies, but thought I’d throw in my two cents worth...

I have a Kindle Paperwhite currently, my third Kindle. The first two failed under warranty and Amazon sent me the Paperwhite. I don’t really notice a lot of screen glare. I do notice the slow and clunky user interface, and have difficulty getting it to sync with the Kindle books I have in my Amazon account. I also have an iPad with the Kindle app. The user interface is so much better with the app, but my iPad drains the battery pretty quickly, while the Paperwhite battery seems to last almost forever.

My choice is to read real books, as I find the electronic reader experience not very gratifying. I also find that I can frequently buy paperback books from Amazon for less than the Kindle version, and I usually check Amazon’s list of used book sellers before I buy new.

I have been using kindle for a long time and have a rather large collection of books. I would recommend the newest kindle paper white, with audio with the 32GB TO SUPPORT AUDIO, and a finite aftermarket cover for protection. If you want color capability for magazines and non-fiction or illustrated books, you want the Kindle Fire 8 inch, with as much memory as you can afford. It is also for movies and other online videos, which always need more memory.

I have a Kindle paper white and LOVE it. It’s easy to carry, easy to hold, easily transported. It’s my preferred way to read. However, our local library does not support downloads to it. If I borrow a library book, I have to use my ipad to read it. So check with your library what readers can be used.
Also, someone mentioned downloading a book to read when off the internet. Our local library’s system doesn’t work that way. I have to be on the internet to read my borrowed books on my ipad.
Another place to check for purchased books at low cost is Book Bub.
Any book you purchase will be available for download whether or not it is currently loaded on your Kindle. Check your account on your PC to see what books you own.
Enjoy your new Kindle. Hope it comes quickly!

Oh, and I just looked the Kindle Paperwhite with 32g (!) memory with no ads is $40 off. I got mine on a similar deal over Black Friday and they said 6 weeks to ship. I think I got it in two.

I have 3 Kindles of various sizes and types. My go to is the Fire 10 for reading and internet. The only drawback is that you have to connect to a local Wi-Fi to access the internet.

Ask Kindle, or if you know the serial number etc they can deactivate the account through that device.

Kindle paperwhite - best ever for reading. No problems with glare. Great selection of books available at Amazon, plus a lot more at my local library.

Look at their Oasis (top of the line). It is pricey, but weighs 6 oz, easy to read with one hand with page turners and very adjustable for comfortable viewing. Had mine for 4 years and love it!

Both my husband and I have Kindles and love them. You can change the print to the size most comfortable, highlight what you like, and keep the equivilent of whole bookscases on them. Early Bird Books and Book Gorilla tip you off to huge discounts and free books. They are worth having and cost nothing. I still collect real books, but this way I have more room for them.
