, the paid upgrade to version 3 is not worth it.[/quote]
Are you saying the new program is not that good or, the upgrades aren't worth it if you already have the free version? Thanks in advance for any replies.
the best black and white conversion is done in Photoshop using gradient map layer and selective color layer you don't need a plug in

I paid for version 2, but I have no need for what version 3 offers. Not worth it.

I would like a suggestion for black & white conversion software for PC Win10.
A while ago I had a free app that I enjoyed. I think it's no longer free. I now have a subscription for Adobe and would like a plugin or complete app.
Corel Paintshop Pro or Aftershot Pro do it for me

I almost always use the Nik B&W conversion program. Topaz also has a good one.
Adobe Ps is really all you need. Use Gradients and that will produce the best, with associated under layers being adjusted.

Both LrC and Photoshop CC offer extensive editing capabilities for B&W conversion. Experiment! You'll like it.

One of the online Lightroom gurus has written and said that the person who created the current Lightroom Classic B&W presets is the same person that did it for NIK Silver Effects Pro "back in the day" when that was as good as it got.
If you already have the Adobe subscription, use it!
I have seen that claim as well. These presets were added probably less than a year ago and are so easy to use even an engineer can do it. It took me in directions I would have never gone with random adjustment of sliders alone. You never have to tell anyone how easy it was.
SharewareOnSale.com has many free programs. They have a free program called Black & White Projects 5. It is a free lifetime license, although no updates nor tech support, but who cares if it works. Might want to see if it meets your needs. I've downloaded several of their free programs and have had no issues.

Nik software does a great job for me as a elements plugin.
Nice article. Though it seems like they are saying you could skip down to the last method and have the best result.
Allmost any oof the photo software will have a black-and-white conversion routine. In the free "IrfanView" it is referred to as a conversion to grayscale. --Richard
I don't believe that there is any advantage to using plug-ins or stand alone programs for black and white conversion if you have an Adobe subscription. Photoshop Camera Raw and Lightroom use the same processing engine and either can be used to do an excellent job whether you use the presets or not. I routinely use LR. First select Black and White at the top of the developing tools palette, make the initial basic exposure, contrast and texture adjustments, then tweak the individual color sliders to get the desired tonal range. Other than that you can research the myriad methods within PS, but I don't think there is any advantage.

Lightroom and Photoshop work just fine on their own!

I'm not sure of the process Irfanview uses to produce a black and white. However, if it is just a desaturation, a lot of tonal control is lost in that process.
