My township library offers Hoopla to members. Hoopla offers free ebooks and audio books. I read/listen to a book on the Hoopla app on my phone or I Pad. I also use the Kindle app on both devices if I borrow or purchase a book from Amazon or other book clubs. My point being you don’t need a Kindle device to read a Kindle book.

I had a couple of hundred books to read a year ago and now my library is getting pretty slim. Our local library isn't open so buying used books there or borrowing isn't an option. I thought about Kindle and wondered just what they're all about and if any of you have Kindles and what model. There seems to be quite a choice and I looked at the PaperWhite, but some reviews said that it had screen glare. I'd like an 8GB as I don't think I need storage capacity for 15,000 books with the 32GB. Do any of you out there have Kindles and what do you like or dislike about the different models available? And can you download books from your local library with a Kindle?

I use an app called “Overdrive” and download ebooks from our local library for free. It’s a great app that allows you to reserve books from your library if they are not immediately available and they will notify you when they do become available so you can download them. They give you 3 weeks to read the book. You can read the downloaded book and read it on kindle. Once the 3 weeks is up you will no longer be able to open the book unless you download it again. I’ve used it for years and my wife and I read hundreds of popular books over the years. Give it a try. You can use both apps - overdrive and Kindle - on any PC, IOS or Android device or Mac.

I have the paperwite & it's fine. Amazon do daily deals at £0.99 so probably do them in US as well: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/l/5400977031/ref=smi_www_rco2_go_smi_1285150262?_encoding=UTF8&ie=UTF8&node=5400977031

He's my take: I am on my 3rd Kindle which is a Paperwhite model and I am very happy with it. Key advantages include the ability to read it on the beach or by the pool. Most phones/tablets don't work well there. And I can read it at night without turning the lights on. Very handy when traveling and I wake up at 5 am in our hotel room while my wife is still sound asleep! You can adjust the font size and style. Don't know a word? Just touch it for a couple of seconds and up pops the definition. I haven't noticed any problem with glare. Price is quite reasonable and there are loads of free or inexpensive books. Can hold in one hand and it's lite. Finally, I can download books here in Bangkok in about 60 seconds over WiFi.

Disadvantages: It's only black and white. That's fine for most books, but not ideal for magazines. Prefer hard copy for reference books as they are easier to flip back and forth.
Cheers,
Don

Agree with “bemac”. I use Overdrive to borrow ebooks from local library. Just need a library card. I use the Kindle app to read them on tablet, phone, iMac, etc. Have fun.

I got my wife a candle white for Christmas and she loves it. She already was using the Kindle app on an old iPad that finally bit the dust. She’s got a few hundred books You can get books free and you can also get books for $.99. Of course the ones I buy cost about $14. I use the app on my iPad.

I have been using a Kindle paperwhite for years. Everything I read is on the Kindle. Millions of low cost and free e-books plus current fiction and non fiction.

Still using the one I bought 12-15 years ago. They last forever.

I have an older model Kindle. Ipad 2. And just love it I use it to read books, newspapers and magazines. I find my aging eyes can read the Ipad magazine edition better than the paper edition (The New Yorker, for example) Although I have many photos, I never have gone past the 45 GB mark of my 64 GB limit.

Amazon has a program called Kindle Unlimited where for $9.99 a month you can download as many books as you want without further charge. It comes with a free period of two or three months I believe.

I recently discovered a wonderful app called Overdrive. Using my library card as ID, I can borrow books from my local library for free. For a small fee, I can join other libraries across the country and borrow books without further charge.

Because of Overdrive, I think I read most of my books for free , probably purchasing one book for every ten I read.

I enjoy my Ipad and Kindle tremendously . Hope you can too

Between my wife and I we have had pretty much every Kindle version, the latest paper white is the best. Runs for a week on a charge which was great for long flights. Easy on the eyes, healthier for you than other screens. Easy to read outside and in sunshine, unlike the iPad. And the latest is waterproof for my wife who likes to read in the bath and the pool. They are just really convenient

I have a Kindle Paper White - absolutely wonderful little device. My library (Louisville KY)has the availability to download books at no cost - have read a bunch of books with no cost and no physical pickup. I highly recommend the device.

I've been real happy with my Kindle Paperwhite for about 6 years, now. As others have noted, the Paperwhite can be read in direct sunlight, unlike a pad or tablet. I have the Kindle app on my iPhone and iMac which are synced with my Paperwhite so I can browse titles on my phone and download a book to my Kindle using my desktop computer. Amazon seems to have a considerably bigger selection of e-books than Kindle and I can download a book from Amazon directly to my Kindle, using my desktop. Very convenient.

I have a couple of kindle fire’s and the kindle app on both my iPad and iPhone as well as my laptop and desktop...I don’t use the computers much for reading on the kindle because of my other devices. I have kindle unlimited and download the unlimited books a lot. You don’t get the newest and the greatest authors usually on u limited. I have found I am reading titles I never would have thought of before and am enjoying them very much. I have downloaded several book series as one volume. I do like reading series. You really get to know the characters and you don’t have to wait for years for the next book to come out.

I also explore the 99¢ books and usually find a few every month. And of course I have my favorite popular authors that sell for more money. As long as I can get an internet connection I don’t have to worry about having a book when I finish what I have.

Another good thing about kindle is it keeps your place for you n all your devices, that is if you have an internet connection.

With my phone I always have my book with me. While waiting in a drs office, for my flight or when out with some down time I can read my latest book and not just sit and stare at the walls.

Chuck

OK, here comes the first of what will be many dumb questions. I left my first Kindle in a hotel in Australia three years ago. Bought a new one (paperwhite) when I got back to the States. My daughter gifted me the Kindle Unlimited for my 65th birthday. Can the finder of my old Kindle use my Kindle Unlimited Plan?
