Dear Horseart...
You have a lot in common with Norman Rockwell and the way he first photographed actors in costume while they created the scene he planned to paint for a magazine cover. Then when he painted while looking at the photograph, he corrected the things the actors could not act out to his satisfaction. You are in good company. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you but I left out the most important thing all artists know and that is to save the beautiful things God gave us to look at. Sometimes what we catch in a photo is a one of a kind EVER!

Personal satisfaction and a challenge to improve, although compliments from friends and family aren't bad either!

I have been trying to improve my photographs since i took my first photo on my Grandmothers Brownie Box Camera when I was about 4 years old. I was fascinated by capturing a slice of time that I could view, I thought forever. There were years I could not take many photo's but many I could and each one I try to make better than the last. It's like I cheated time and snatched a small second of it out to save. It's a great hobby, and I have been offered jobs taking pics, but never excepted because if I did, then it would be work and just would not be the same to me. It's different for others and I'm sure each are motivated differently. It's relaxing and self satisfying. I'm still trying to improve because each second of time I capture for me is precious and I want to preserve it better.

If I'm going to take photographs then make them the best that I can. Whom am I trying to impress? Myself.

That is my answer also.

I like visual Memories.
(My hall way is covered.)
I like the travel to locations
I like fiddling with lots of gadgets
( similar to flyfishing fishing tools & flies )
I love to explore a location
I love being "instant" "Hey, Let's go....and take a picture"
day or night. Usually Evening.
I like to keep this, almost 80 yr old guy learning *
* It's the remembering, I have trouble
I like the post processing and learn curve
I like to be amazed every now & then. How I have been "Lucky".
To be "there" at the right time or obtained a photo
which thousands of people have liked.
I love to be creative... sometimes it even works or looks good/great
Finally,
Recently we have had a high number of friends pass and my daughter from 1st marriage.
The last couple times, I just had to take a sunset photo to obtain Closure.
Then create a sunset of closure in Post Processing for me and others.

Motivation is a very personal thing. I have encountered photographers who were strictly in the business to make money. Others I ran across seemed to crave fame and recognition for their work over compensation. Yet again, others had reasons I never dreamed of. Would you care to share your reasons for striving to be the best photographer you can be?

It helps me to see life and take an interest in that life while many others miss many things just doing their daily routines without looking around at everything that is surrounding them.

i GO OUT WITH A FACEBOOK GROUP, my satisfaction and the reason I strive to better my photos is. We all take the same pic of a bird, I like when they ask me why my pic is better than theirs. though its the same pic
The reasons are simple, maybe a reflection in the eye, the rule of 3rds, giving the subject room to move on the image. Maybe some nice bokeh .As I teach them what I did i then strive to stay one step ahead of them..
oh yea many are now much better than Iam... and im happy with that ...

I have always enjoyed photography to record memories, children, and grandchildren. With digital photography I can now use photography as a form of art. The person who posted what he envisioned vs what he drew could have been me, but his drawing was much better than anything I could create. Also like going out to explore the world and look at it from a different perspective. Today was a snow day. My challenge was to take bird portraits of the birds coming to my feeder. It was fun. Still have the card in my camera and will probably continue that project tomorrow.

The feeling of satisfaction (which is an understatement) of capturing a great photo and processing it so that it is a reasonable facsimile of what I saw and is artistic.

I make photographs to capture the moment. I find I can’t just look at a lake or a pier or the ocean without either trying to capture it or think about how to capture a great shot. Of course all and most of my captures aren't great so the second part of my photo addiction is to try and make the shots better in post production. That is very satisfying because they usually do in fact improve.
The negative to this whole process is I find I am not one that go sit on a mountain and enjoy just being on a mountain. I unfortunately find that a very unsatisfying activity.

It just doesn't seem to make any sense to me do something and not try to do the best job that you can.

That !

Plus cuz photography gave me a decent retirement I’ll often render services pro bono in support of other artists. And it would be inappropriate to do less than great work for another great artist. It’s Karmic Investment.

Mainly artistic expression. I also draw, paint and compose music. For me, photography is just as valid as an art form as any other. Whenever I hear/read statements insisting that photography does not qualify as art - I can't disagree more. Certainly there are some types of photography which probably don't fall in the realm of art (ID card photos, for example). But what I do is art.

I have seen ID “mug shots” as art. Not purely limited to visual art. Conceptual art. Including artist being charged with multiple felonies. The project title was “Extended Credentials” or “Image and Identity” by J. Jaroslav. It involved the artist’s face on about 20 real but quite fraudulently acquired driver licenses, each in the name of different recently deceased person, each framed and matted, spanning all four walls of an exhibition. The artist was resident in a different state than where he acquired the licenses, so it was an FBI bust.
