I own a retail business. I don’t touch a product that I can’t get close to 100% mark up on. By the time I pay expenses I am lucky if that 100% mark up is providing 5% profit. Business owners expenses are skyrocketing and it will get much worse with an anti small business mentality of our current administration. I just couldn’t resist getting a political dig in. 😂
So so true. I owned a business for 20 years. After you pay for the product, pay the employees, pay rent, pay Workers Comp, pay Unemployment Tax, pay Social Security and Medicare match, pay for advertising and God knows whatever else whatever profit is made is then TAXED by Uncle Sam!! 5% profit would be considered a Good Year!!

Tomcat5133 like so many other UHH's your focus is totally off the mark.
Photographic kit is merely a tool to assist the photographer to express (capture) their visual statement.
For commercial photographers this tool is a debit which must be balanced against income revenue.
Sadly Tomcat5133 you are more concerned about your kit's market liquidity than capturing breathtaking which speaks of one's visual statement.
I went back and checked the original post by Tomcat, and have to say I did not see evidence of what you assert above.
What was really distressing is that you should be so affronted by a persons opinion that you would declare they were in someway not a (true) photographer. All this without apparent knowledge of the individual.
I would say a person (you) who would do such a thing in a public forum have no right or business to consider they are a photographer — merely a boor.

I have been selling to MPB and KEH for many years. These prices don't seem that unusual. On average I got about 45% of the original sell price.
Considering the cost of mid and top end new cameras I would expect the used gear market to be booming.
Thanks Joer I was getting about 40% on good gear in great shape. I expected a hit but 30% or less no.
Thanks Tom
You don’t have to pay their price and they don’t have to pay yours. It’s called capitalism. Wait until this Covid thing is over and people will bet back out, work, have money, travel, and need a camera. I’m also a cattleman. The feeders are stealing my stock and the butchers art still making a premium. Tough market right now. Time to buy a used camera or lens ifyou need one.
Thank you everyone who supported my new topic about the state of camera's. What makes me sad is
the state of these wonderful camera's and lens by great companies. I like it here because most understand
the passion for imagery, creativity and the craft of photography and videography. I had the pleasure in my advertising work of spending time with icons like Pete Turner.
I am well aware of business economics of businessesI owned a number of creative businesses.
That is why I am here. When I ask a question many members try to help out with information.
The last thought is anger seems to be here in our society. And creative people have always helped
each other and supported the arts and advertising for the better.
I lag five or six years behind the newest technology in photography. I simply can't afford brand new gear, or the latest features. I manage to get along fine this way. I love Nikon products, but wish I had the lens interchangeability of other brands. That's my only regret.
Technology in any form can be a wonderful advantage, but changes come so rapidly that we can't simply upgrade at every turn. Perhaps this is why manufacturers encourage marketing to *new *consumers who aren't financially invested in a dedicated system.
I also believe the consumer market in the case of used retailers is low balling trades or purchase offers; the difference between buy prices and sell prices is eye opening , but used retailers maintain a livelihood in sales by offering warranties.Ultimately we control the prices by purchases.
