I enjoy the journey of learning. That could be said of many vocations and hobbies but I'm also drawn to the opportunity to create the occasional image that I can be proud of. Hopefully 2021 will give me more time to pursue my hobby. 2020 threw me too many issues that took too many hours out of my work week to allow me time to take many photos.

Dear JimmyTB...Photography is definitely intellectually stimulating. There are not many things in the world that combine both art and science the way photography does. I hope you are able to do more photography during 2021 to enjoy yourself. In case you haven't guessed, doing photography gives me great joy and for the reward it gives, it doesn't have to be expensive. My mother, who shot with a little, cheap, Kodak-box-camera that took blurry pictures, taught me to love photography.

I only consciously strive to be the best photographer when I am working; when doing it for someone else who is expecting and compensating my effort.

Otherwise I'll just be doing my own thing, whatever makes me happy or tickle my inquisitiveness. If it makes me the best photographer, cool, but that is not the objective.

Primarily I'm an artist and there are times only a camera can help record what I see. Specially fleeting moments so it is just a matter of using the right tool for the job. Otherwise I would be sketching. It's not that hard but it takes longer.
To be truthful, even though I have been into photography for a very long time, it is only a small part of my interests. Unless I am using it at work, I consider it playtime when I am doing photography.

The catch is, pretty much all of the other activities I do requires perfection thus giving it my best shot has become my personal default and I carry that mindset over to photography.

Dear Wallen...Your response reminds me of what I learned when I read about Thomas Jefferson, one of the froefathers of America. Jefferson had many varied interests and was excellent at many things. He was always intellectually curious and spent a lifetime learning. Congratulations on your achievements. (I personally loved your drawing style.) Thank you for sharing.

It just doesn't seem to make any sense to me do something and not try to do the best job that you can.

Dear fchretdet....Being a perfectionist is not all bad. As a dentist, I always strived to do the very best work I was capable of in my patients mouths. The patients seemed to appreciate it and it gave me great satisfaction. Now that I am retired, I try to do the same with photography. Doing anything half-heartedly makes no sense to me either. Thank you for sharing.

I am a highly "visual" person, a "tekkie" (both professionally and in my day-to-day life) and enjoy trying to get the best out of the equipment I have. Learning and adapting techniques to further my portrayal of things around me stimulates me to do better and I enjoy both my successes and my failures. I started this voyage with B&W negatives I found in my grandmother's attic in the early 60s and am self-taught. I hope to continue improving as time goes on - we all know that photography is a combination of craft, technique, artistry and equipment, so I keep honing the first three and use the best technology that I can afford so that I have nothing to blame but myself if I fail to produce what I visualized before I operated the shutter button.
My "art" appeals to me - I do not expect gratification beyond the pleasure I get from the process of making the image. I will always strive to do better and to understand how I may have failed in my quest.

I'm the church historian and have my camera with me every Sunday. It's a challenge to record the history of the church during the pandemic. I have photos of parts of the service that never would have taken place before the pandemic. Events like the pandemic challenge us to rethink the ways we have been doing things and perhaps cause us to come up with better ways to accomplish better end results.

Motivation is a very personal thing. I have encountered photographers who were strictly in the business to make money. Others I ran across seemed to crave fame and recognition for their work over compensation. Yet again, others had reasons I never dreamed of. Would you care to share your reasons for striving to be the best photographer you can be?

What motivates me is Pride in workmanship, my main goal is to please Me, and if other are pleased by my work so much the better.

Looking at my older work and realizing I could have done better. I strive to be a better photographer each year than I was the year before. It's been my guiding motivation and inspiration for the past 54 yrs. I don't study photography per se - but I do study my own work with increasing scrutiny as time goes on. I will always be a photographer in training, since a day rarely passes that I don't learn something new.

Mainly artistic expression. I also draw, paint and compose music. For me, photography is just as valid as an art form as any other. Whenever I hear/read statements insisting that photography does not qualify as art - I can't disagree more. Certainly there are some types of photography which probably don't fall in the realm of art (ID card photos, for example). But what I do is art.

For me, Photography is the perfect blend of art and technology. I love learning photography and being able to apply what I learn to the next shot. When I look through the viewfinder I want to find something a little different, something I haven’t seen before. I live in a place of great natural beauty and iconic structures. It is easy to find postcard pictures. I shoot to find something a little different.
