We lived in the heart of "Sound of Music" country, the Salzkammergut, for over 30 years and often gave visiting friends a tour. There are 76 lakes in this region and they all have drinking water quality! The famous film was given a German sound track and shown a few times in Austria, but it was not well received. 1) The lovely landscape is their daily wallpaper. 2) They don't like to be reminded of their Nazi past. 3) The Von Trapp family escaped by fleeing across a mountain into Switzerland, which is actually about a 4-hour drive. 4) The dubbed German voices spoke German rather than Austrian dialects.

It took Hollywood much longer to make the film than it had planned due to the long periods of rain and fog. These are the reasons why the country is so beautiful when the sun shines!

My father's whole side of the family is in Lawrence. My brother in law and his family live in New Paltz. I also have cousins in Poughkeepsie. Both my parents had 10 brothers and sisters, so lots of aunts, uncles, cousins. Most are deceased now though

Long Island was a great place to grow up. I lived near lots of water. Now it's wall-to-wall traffic.

Yes, I grew up on the Great South bay, fishing, clamming, Fire Island. Left 18years ago when I retired to get away from high taxes and poor Gov't.

I actually met her in 1958 when she visited my Catholic HS in Patchogue, NY. It was 10 years before the movie was made and I wasn't paying much attention. It turned out to be one of the most popular movies in history!

Maria Augusta von Trapp (1905)
Born in Austria and orphaned at a young age, Maria Kutschera planned to become a nun in Salzburg. Instead, she met Baron Georg von Trapp while tutoring one of his seven children. They were married in 1927 and had three children together. After financial trouble, the family began to sing professionally, then fled Nazi Europe for the US. Today, the family operates a lodge in Vermont. Maria's 1949 memoir was adapted into The Sound of Music.

The movie yes. The play no. I saw the Broadway version with the original cast (Mary Martin & Theodore Bickel) and it was excellent. The movie was with Julie Andrews, was as usual custom, negatively altered from the original with the best song cut, and was a real maggot gagger.

In 2011 we were visiting New England for the fall colours and briefly visited the von Trapp lodge in Vermont. Photo attached.
