Just FYI, I've been researching Exposure 6 which is an alternative to LR and also includes Layers. It's a one time purchase and you can download a free trial which allows full use for 30 days. It looks very promising. It has very similar UI like LR which is why I really like it. It used to be alian skin but has expanded into what it is today.

I am a fan of lightroom and bought lightroom 5.71 around 2014 on a DVD for Mac & Windows for around 140 Euro's I first installed it on my first Macbook which ran osx 10.7, unfortunately when lightroom 6 was released it wasn't compatible or I might have bought that when it was still available. Since then I have bought other software including Affinity Photo before it was even ported to Windows I also bought Affinity Designer and Publisher and have had regular free updates for all 3.

I don't think there is a better photo organizer than lightroom, most of my raw files are in dng format natively. I have one camera which isn't directly supported by lightroom 5.71 and adobe helpfully provides thier free dng converter. They also have the free adobe bridge which also does photo organisation but you need to create your own folder organisation but it's really designed to work with photoshop but it will work with affinity photo.
The other reason for using lightroom is its ability to pass photos to external plugins and applications so lightroom is like my home base for me.

When Apple released later versions of OSX that wouldn't run 32 bit applications the installer was broken and just recently Apple released M1 macs which use Arm CPUs which is a different instruction set to the x86 instruction set Lightroom was designed to run on. I had lightroom 5.71 installed on an external hard drive which I plugged into my M1 mini with apple not having a registry I decided to start up lightroom on the drive and it crashed. However I decided to give it another shot and copied it over to my m1 macs application folder and tried to run it from there. This time it ran and asked me to register it or use it in trial mode, I opted for trial mode and developed a few photo's with it it worked fine but i knew i would want the lens and camera profiles so i also dragged over the adobe folder in library/application support. Which worked out fine and then dug out my Lightroom DVD and registered lightroom.

Lightroom 6 will probably also work similarly, however they do have a license check which requires Adobes servers to authenticate once in a while this will not be a problem unless Adobe decommissions them which will happen eventually. With the cost of my lightroom purchase and the cost of my m1 mac mini, I probably have spent the same as Gene over the years. It's probably fair to say not going the subscription route has saved me enough to pay for the Mac Mini. The Subscription route would cost me more than Gene because of additional taxes, and exchange rates, so i'm also quite happy not to be taxed on the photos i take each month. I have found a few copies of lightroom 5 on ebay but not lightroom 6.

Suggest you switch to ON1, and you won’t have to deal with Adobe’s subscription nonsense. I used LR for years, and in MYHO, ON1 is a better product.

No different than the fanatics who continually try to push people toward it. Everybody has their own reasons. The Lightroom/Photoshop bundle is a good deal for anyone who is really in to post processing. It is a waste of money for anyone who just wants to make minor adjustments. For those folks even $1 is a waste of money, because they can get free programs that will do more than they need...

+1

If people post about processing I tend to think they have some interest in it, so I recommend LR/PS as a good deal.

But I agree that for those not into processing it's not something they need.

I currently use Lightroom and pay the monthly subscription fee for it and Photoshop. If I stop paying for it will I still be able to use it as it is? Is there a way to pay for the program just once?

I don't think the answer based on opinion is going to help you at all. This is a question best answered, by fact, from Adobe.

I believe you can still buy a perpetual licence just for Lightroom. It might be just the downloadable version. You will get updates for a while ( probably a year).

You just don't get it, do you??? You are a complete jerk. There are tons of reasons some people do not want to pay the monthly fee. Your reasoning may not apply to other people. You have no understanding and just flip out meaningless words about why someone shouldn't mind the monthly fee that doesn't apply to you. YOU ARE A BIG JERK!!!!! Why did you even reply?? It certainly served no purpose except to expose yourself as a jerk. This answer applies to all the other jerks out there who just don't "get it" and flip out the same words...just pay the monthly fee.

My goodness Flakes, what's got into you today??? By the way, we don't know who you are calling a BIG JERK if you fail to hit the "quote reply" button. But I think I get it. You believe we are all jerks.

Don't be a jerk!

If you are going to call someone a jerk, use 'quote reply' so folks know who you are calling a jerk.

Without using quote reply, you look like a jerk.

Just sayin'

Today you would pay at least $20 to buy and develop a 36 exposure roll of color film. IMHO there is no greater bargain for photographers today to have the latest Lightroom, Photoshop and bridge at you disposal 24/7.

I hit the reply after the specific person's comment. The reply was meant only for that person. So many times ppl make comments against people who just don't want to pay a monthly fee for LR for whatever reason. That person's flip thoughtless comment finally got to me. It was the straw that "broke the camel's back". I for one do not/will not pay LR monthly fee. For example, with the "pandemic" our photo club stopped having photoshoots. I used LR only TWO times this year. So, I should pay when I don't use it???? In addition, I'm on a very strict budget being well advanced in years (those are my specific reasons). That particular person bragged about all his expensive camera equipment and assumed that the rest of us did likewise. So if a person has a lot of $$$$ camera equipment, why would they balk at paying a monthly fee was his assumption. That is what "got into" me as you put it. I don't reply that often, so I did it wrongly. How do you reply to one specific person anyway??

Which of these, Lightroom or Photoshop, did you use on the photos you post?

Could you have gotten the same results from PS Elements?

You can send them a private message, menu at the top. Or you have about an hour I think to edit your prior posts. You can't totally take it down, but you can replace it with a _ or a 'post deleted' message. If you hit quote reply then everyone knows who you are responding to.

This one's for you Flakes ....

Too many people subscribe to advanced software to edit RAW files to impress people they don't like.

No you won't be able to continue to use it. I believe you are supposed to be able to use it as a browser, at least for a while, but you will not be able to do any editing and I don't think you will be able to import/export any longer. If you are using the CC version and your photos are stored in the cloud you will probably want to download all of them onto your computer before stopping the Adobe service or you may not be able to download them later.

If you want something close to Lightroom you can download the free program "darktable 3.4" and try it out. There is a learning curve but there are also loads of videos as well as a good User Manual to help you. If you use Photoshop sometimes you might want to get "Affinity Photo" which is avail at half price now for $24.99 and you actually own it. If you want a free replacement you could try "Gimp".

No worries Flakes. Do keep in mind though that your posts remain forever. There are a few of mine I would like to delete but, to the best of my knowledge, it cannot be done. There are a couple buttons at the bottom of each post. The "Reply" button basically replies to all. The "Quote Reply" button allows you to respond to a particular person/post. Regarding your recent post, if you mean to say you only used LR two times in 2020 then I agree it's not worth it to you. Please do whatever makes the most sense to you. I think the Adobe bundle is a bargain but I use it a lot. I certainly wouldn't pay for it if I only used it twice a year.
