We have frontier FiOS and just had a new router installed. The new one and the old one will not reach the other end of the house to run my wife's iPad. the distance is about 70' and there is two drywall walls between the router and the place where my wife uses the ipad at night.

the new routers do not have the range the first one we got about 15 years ago had. The house i two stories. We have two Samsung smart tvs, two iPad and 2 iPhone connected.

Any suggestions as to what router will fix the issue.

If you have Fios tv you need a Fios router to maintain your TV guide function. Fios doesn't play well with aftermarket routers. About 3 years ago I had problems using a non Fios router. I had to stick with their crappy short range Gateway router with an extender. There may be new workarounds today. Hope this helps you. I use a tpc link extender and it works fine.

First off...Prost to a fellow home brewer!!

It could be a number of things. And to minimize some of the Q&A back and forth, here is some general info:

- 802.11g (2.4GHz) and 802.11n (2.4/5Ghz) have indoor ranges of 38m and 70m respectively. That doesn't take in account for atmospherics, obstructions, or layout (multiple floors, etc...)

- Competing wifi signals in the local area can affect signal quality as well. Your old router may have been on a channel that was clear from other wifi signals, whereas this one just may have been set up on a congested channel. There are free phone apps that you can download to see this information. If your wifi is competing against someone else's, it's pretty easy to log into the router and change the channel.

Apart from changing the channel, if you can't change the location of the router, you can more than likely buy a repeater that basically boosts the main wifi signal further. Again, with the limited information provided, there isn't much past speculation that can be provided for answers.

Edit: Sorry, forgot to add in 802.11ac range. (2.4/5Ghz) approximately 35 meters indoors.

I used the Fios router for that function, but attached my own personal router to that for wifi.

Basically set up like this:
Fios router: 192.168.1.1
Personal router: 192.168.1.2

The personal router needs to have the gateway set to 192.168.1.1 in order for routing to work correctly.

If your Frontier FiOS router is also combined into a single unit with the Frontier modem, perhaps you can disable the wireless router function on the Frontier device. Get yourself a "mesh" type wireless router system such as Netgear "ORBI" with one or two wireless "satellite" routers that extend the range of your network through a back-haul channel to the main "ORBI" unit which is connected by ethernet cable to the FiOS modem. There are several high quality wireless mesh router systems available. I recommend the Netgear "ORBI" due to 4 years of flawless coverage and performance in a 2500 s.f. two floor home. It is not cheap, but it does what you need. I have recently seen the latest "ORBI" router system for sale at Costco and Best Buy, and of course at Amazon.

The cheap (~$30) repeaters work.

I second MrBossHK's recommendation to attach a mesh wifi network to your router. I've had Google mesh for over 2 years with excellent coverage throughout our 2 story house with no hiccups.

Try a mesh system, the google WiFi works great for us, and it is $229.00 at Costco for four. That should more than cover your home.

I have Frontier but have never been satisfied with their business practices. However I do like the Fios part. I got fed up with their constantly eliminating channels. So I decided to cut the cord. I doing so I found that Frontier is trying to get out of the TV business. This has been confirmed but several techs over the last couple of months. When I complained to Frontier initially they offered to set me up with their "Partner" AT&T.

Since cutting the cord I went with my own router and upped my service speed. Not quite as convenient as the channel lineup selection but so mush more content is available now. Also cost was reduced by half.

Router is an important part and it's selection depends on the devices you have and their bandwidth demands. Also whether you have a recent smart TV. Otherwise you would have to interface your router with something like a Roku or Amazon Fire Stick.

I just did a quick search on BestBuy and found these two. I can't speak to reliability, but you don't need much more than that to cover a typical residential house.

This covers up to 802.11n ($32.99)

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/netgear-essentials-edition-n300-wi-fi-range-extender-white/9064008.p?skuId=9064008

This covers up to 802.11ac ($59.99)

I have comcast and I installed 3 Xfi Pods to extend mine through out the house. Maybe FIOS has something similar.

AT&T and DirectTV merged several years ago, so they are trying to sell internet/satellite TV as a package deal.

I had both services for a couple years and was very impressed with their gigabit ethernet. Unfortunately, the satellite service just didn't work for me due to unpredictable weather and my love for live soccer
