In addition to the good advice given above, you should look into lenses designed for shooting video on SLR's. The focusing motors are very quiet so that the camera mike doesn't pick it up. Might also help with the autofocus problems too, although that is a common complaint.

And if you can find parafocal zooms (the focus doesn’t change with zoom), that will make your life easier.

Same here. I've used my D7100 and D7200 for video, but it's just to cumbersome to set up and use. Focusing is difficult and the file sizes are HUGE. I find that my iPhone 12 Pro takes AWESOME video, especially at night. My previous iPhone 7 was great, but the 12 Pro is even better.

I would LOVE to use my DSLR for video if it was easier to use.

Improved video auto focus is one of the main reasons the Z6 and Z7 were invented. There are no DSLRs that have good video auto focus.
