At that range, I suppose you are going for small subjects but not 'macro', and would like to have some depth of focus. I like f/11 - f/16, but the background will be 'busy', to varying degrees, unless you can compose for it to be far away.
As was nicely shown, you can arrange for indoor shots or shooting in the shade (so not good light, exactly). Then its easy to use a flash and get a well lit subject on a black background via small apertures. You will have to experiment. And each subject may call for different settings. The sun going behind a cloud can call for adjustment in settings.

With my macro setup, I need to shoot at f/11 or smaller aperture. Since my macro setup has manual focus lenses, I sometimes need to open the aperture to focus and then stop down for the actual exposure. I will also often side light my macro images with a speedlight.

What settings are recommended for objects at around 2' distance in good light?
Thanks for your suggestions-----

Put your camera on Auto until you have a chance to understand Aperture, Shutter-Speed and ISO. It isn't terribly complicated after you have made 10,000 images. The main thing is to use your camera often.

You've gotten some good advice here, and even some pictures so you now know what flowers look like. Isn't UHH just the greatest?!

Learning / read books etc. BEFORE purchase.

Good advice. The OP has the lens - if he/she were able to learn by doing, this would never have been posted.
