Since there were only 31 of my car manufactured, I never have any trouble recognizing it.
About 30 years ago I had a Jeep that used an Infrared type remote lock. One day I parked in a lot, got out and started to walk away. I reached back with the fob and pressed the button and heard a beep-beep. The only problem was that my Jeep didn't do beep-beep. It just went ker-chunk (which I heard too). I stopped and turned around and pressed the fob button again and heard another beep-beep a couple of spaces down. I tried it a couple of more times, same results. I just shook my head, put my keys in my pocket and went on in to the store.
My daughter parked her new white Wrangler Unlimited at a commuter rail station every day. One day she ran from the train and hopped into it, immediately noticing that the seat was all the way back. Oops, did she get in the wrong car? But... the key worked... and all her crap was still in the back seat. Then she looked down, and realized what had happened. Someone had unzipped the top, opened the car and took her front rugs and floor mats. She had parked near a security camera, but the cops checked, and it hadn't worked for months.
We put her hard top on that weekend, never to be removed again. And she didn't bother getting the soft top with her second Unlimited.

I came out of the grocery store and went to my vehicle and it wouldn’t respond to touch or to the “fob.” And, I walked around attempting same. And, I looked at the driver-door side panel where the code could be entered by hand. I knew it was my car because I just had washed it. This is where I normally park.
I started to think how I was going to get back home where I have another fob. Then, I pressed the ‘urgent” button and started hearing a honking sound a few parking lanes away. There was my vehicle just where I left it. Oh! No. Whew! I looked into the interior of the “wrong” car and could see things not mine. Then, I knew. Whew!
I’m not telling my family members because they think I am wealthy and will seize this opportunity to have me committed. Ha!
Joke’s on me.

The opposite happened to me. I came out of an arena one evening and just as I approached my car a lady was opening the door and telling her son to get in. She was embarrassed but shouldn’t have been. She used her remote to open my door. She probably would have noticed as soon as she got in.

Happened to me, too. Well, in this day and age, we all go about our daily chores both doing them while thinking about everything else or making future plans. It's understandable. The miracle is that it doesn't happen even more often
I've done that, and I wondered why my remote wouldn't unlock the door.

My wife's car, which I also drive often, is a Nissan Rogue, white. There are a jillion of these things around, about half are white, so this happens frequently for us. I try to identify the license plate first.

That magic button on the fob has saved me from wandering around a parking lot more times than I can count.

Hahahaha, at least you didnt get shot for messing with someone else's car.
I think I can top yours though.
I can remember way back as kid, when we didnt have to lock things up, I had gone grocery shopping with my Mother, and had gone in the store with her,
but after awhile I asked if I could go sit in the car, "again back when it was safe to do that", so I went out and got in the car and sat waiting for Mother to come out, when all of a sudden this strange lady gets in the drivers seat and starts the car with me sitting in the back, and not seeing me, and all I could say is why are you starting MY Mother's car....needless to scared the begeebees out of her. Anyway it all worked out as my Mothers car was only about 3 spaces away and she had come out at the same time as this other women.

Probably happened to others who just won't fess up!
A few days ago I went grocery shopping. Asparagus was on the list and I walked up and down the isle several times not finding any. Finally found the vegie guy and asked if there was any asparagus. He pointed. I was standing right next to it.
This getting old really is the pits!
