If you aren't in a rush, you might wait a bit. Nikon had a sale on this lens a month or so ago ( think it was $300 off). So there must be quite a few in the pipeline.

Since I have acquired the 500mm PF lens, it has seldom been off my D850. It makes carrying and hand-holding shooting so much easier. It takes sharp images, autofocus work very well and I heartily recommend this lens. I also have the 200-500 lens, but it will get increasingly limited use.

The 500mm PF is now my standard lens on my D500 for birding (and moon shots. etc.). Last week I was with a small group of shooters observing a Red-tailed Hawk when it suddenly took off. I was the only one able to swing my camera and lens up to capture any of the flight. Between the sharpness and the lite weight, it is an excellent addition for wildlife shooting if you can swing the expense.

500mm is the smallest for small birds , and at time too large for bigger subjects that are too close .a zoom will give you more choices .150 / 600 mm is more flexible .

I have the Sigma 150-600. I’m looking for better IQ. I’ve seen the 300mm results on a D500 and they are amazingly sharp crisp and detailed.
Thank you for your reply 👍🏻

Search You Tube for video reviews of this lens as a wildlife lens. Steve Perry in particular is a well known professional reviewer who produces quality in depth reviews. There are several others out there as well

There are 2 late model 500mm F8 Mirror lenses on Roberts Used Photo right now, one with the filter set. They are great people to deal with and have a six month guarantee. Just got my latest used lens from them yesterday.

Bought it last July I had a D5500 to use it with. It produced excellent results, but for BIF my D5500 @ 5fps is too slow. You should be good with the D850, for Christmas I got a D500, 10fps I have been very happy with the limited number of photos I have been able to take to date.

I have the 500pF and the D850. Wonderful combo! Great IQ and great backgrounds. I use the lens mounted on my D850 especially during low-light Wintertime.

Taken 1-6-20201 4:40 PM. D850, 500pF, SB700. The 500pF really brings it! This was a very bad light circumstance, but I had to try. ISO was 8000!

Thanks to the almost 400 members of this flickr group who have contributed the almost 12,000 photos! (I only contributed a small percentage of these).
