If you already have a phone with GPS, there is a "free" option that some people use.

When in a location, take a "reference" photo with your phone. You will now have a photo tagged with GPS and time.

When back at your computer, use the phone photo to determine location. It is easy to "batch" assign GPS data in software such as LR. You just drag your un-tagged photos onto the map where where the phone photo is.

Not as elegant as having built-in GPS, but it works.

As to those asking why GPS is needed... I've got a pretty good memory for locations, too. There are still plenty of hikes, trail rides, and other "backwoods" adventures that are fun to see on a map. It is very convenient to click once and see a map of exactly where you were on that trail five or ten years ago.

When arguing with a relative on exactly who hosted Christmas in 2002, the data can also come in handy. :)

I am looking for a Photo tracker to tag the location of my photos. I will be using it with a Nikon D7200 and want it to be able to export GPX files if it does not directly communicate with the camera. I am most interested in some sort of iPhone app but am also considering standard alone and dedicated devices. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations?

I believe the gp-1 from Nikon will go out. I used it on 3300 and it is supposed to work on the 7200 also. There are also copy cat, third party ones.

Also, snap bridge will also tag I believe. I've used it to control my 7200 but not tagging. Is free.

I admit I would not use it all the time, but they are nice to document trail hikes and view points especially in wilderness areas.

My camera (Canon T61) does not have GPS, when I want to identify a location precisely I take an accompanying shot with my cell phone with the GPS location feature enabled. Then I can get the precise address, latitude & longitude as well as time & altitude. (fun if you are taking pictures from the plane)

GAIA GPS and All Trails hiking apps allow uploads of route GPS data to Google Earth. Compare the time your photo was taken to the GPS location data recorded at the same time. I do this with my Garmin device frequently because the GPS setting burns up my cameras battery life too fast.

I use GPS when I'm in unfamiliar hiking grounds. I shoot Nikon D5500, https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product-archive/gps/gp-1-gps-unit.html. It is a drain on the battery.

Take a look at DAWN di-GPS. I found a GPS accessory there for my Nikon. It attaches via the accessory plug and records GPS data directly in the camera. No need to do more than turn it on and wait for a GPS fix. No monkeying around with syncing cell phones, etc. One of their units worked very well for me on a similar Nikon. Their site says they have models compatible with the D7200.

I must admit that I have often wondered why I might need a GPS tag on my photos and what really useful purpose it serves for those that use it. I guess I'm still a bit confused, as I can look at photos I took over 30 years ago and tell you right where they were taken. Frankly, if I took the picture, I generally have a pretty good idea of where it was taken and what I was trying to capture. Therefore, I have not seen the need to spend extra money for the GPS tagging and really don't know what I would use it for if I did.

However, I guess having a GPS tag might be helpful for someone else going through my archive photos, probably after I'm gone. However, my family seems to have little interest in them now and I pretty much expect that the vast majority of my photos will pretty much die with me. So, what's the point? If you use GPS tagging and really find it useful, I'd love to hear why and how you personally utilize it. Thanks for any feedback you might provide!

Here's an example: Let's say, you work for a major construction firm and your job is to document the progress of various construction sites with images. GPS tagging all of your images can make it later easier to determine which image came from which site.

I can certainly see where in a "documentation scenario" that GPS tagging could indeed be useful. I just don't see any real advantage to using it on my personal photos. I really think that in most cases GPS tagging is just another new toy to play with. Nothing wrong with that, I love toys too, it's just not something I have any real interest in at this time. However, you do bring up a valid point and I appreciate your response! Good luck and good shooting to all.

I'll give you another example.

I spent a month in new England and Nova Scotia. I took lots of photos. A Lot of them were lighthouses, which can look alike. When I got back, I could not remember, the name and locations, of some of them. Turn on the map view in LR, and viola, I could tell which was which.

There were others that gps helped me to remember what and where they were. I'm getting to old and my memory, especially shirt term, is not as good as it was.

I have some photos and videos that I took on a cruise from Boston to Montreal a few years ago and I still wish I had GPS data to identify where I was along the Gaspe peninsula. One day we spent in Charlottetown PEI and we boarded ship again late in the day, perhaps 5 p.m. I have pictures as we left but it got dark and the next morning all I know was that the pictures I took were from somewhere between PEI and Quebec City. I do wish I knew where.

There is a use for GPS, but all the time. Not needed for family pics for sure, but when out traveling, I think they are a necessity.

I've used one for three four years. I had a cable problem right off the bat, my problem. Haven't had a problem with them since. one thing I noticed on a lot of reviews is 90% or more are always negative cuz you never hear the good.
