You need to visit an intensive care covid ward (hopefully not as a patient) to understand the agony. I know a nurse who works in one; she comes home every day stunned and exhibits PTSD symptoms. She did not feel that way when working in previous intensive care units. She has been a nurse for 23 years and says she has never seen anything like it; nothing comes close.

By the way, 1% of the population is more than 3.28 million people. And then there are those additional people who survive covid but have long term health issues--foggy brains, loss of taste and smell, heart problems, lung problems, etc.
