CFExpress Card Error on Canon R5

Lexar changed ownership a while back, and hasn't had a great reputation since.

The CFExpress card does get hot in a reader. This apparently is normal and may explain why the camera overheats when shooting 8K video. There is no heat sink or other ways to dissipate the accumulated heat inside the body.

What happened when you tried a different CFExpress card?
What did Canon tech support say?

In my experience my R5 is not part of the equaion. I have run a number of tests, and the card heated up to an uncomfortable level each time. The most recent one I plugged the card (Sandisk 64gb) into the reader (Lexar), plugged the reader into my iMac and let it idle for a couple minutes, no downloading action at all. I removed the card, too hot to handle comfortably.

My local b&m is workingthe issue.

This is somewhat disappointing, I am getting card reading errors on my Canon R5, and yes, I have repeatedly formatted the card in camera and the errors persist, the camera will do fine with the card for a while and then start giving the errors. Don't know if it is the card or the camera, hoping another member can give me some pointers, of course the card is being returned, both the camera and card are brand new, had them for about 2 weeks.

I was not happy that Canon changed from the CF card to the CFExpress card but I understand for 8K video the older CF cards are not capable enough, but that is just one more expense you have to consider when buying new gear.

Anyway, I know that this camera is pretty new to the market and there are not a lot of owners out there but I am just wondering if anyone else is having a similar problem on their R5 or R6.

If it were me, I would be getting in touch with the memory card manufacturer and Canon. One or the other of them might be able to tell you if there's a known problem and if or how it can be addressed. By contacting them you also are taking the first step toward a possible warranty claim, if it comes to that.

You also might want to check if there's a firmware update for the camera.... And if there is, read the description to see if it addresses anything related to the memory cards.

I don't know if there are problems with their products now....

But, yes, Lexar was owned by Micron, who acquired the company in 2006 and then in turn sold it to Shenzhen Longsys Electronics Co., Ltd. in 2017. Longsys reintroduced the brand in 2018, again producing various memory card products as well as innovating some new ones.

FYI, a relatively new memory card manufacturing company called ProGrade Digital was formed by several ex-Lexar and Micron executives. By all reports, they're offering good, reliable products at competitive prices. I see they have four grades/speeds of CFexpress cards and two speed classes of SD memory cards. https://shop.progradedigital.com/

The ProGrade cards get good reviews, in contrast to Lexar.

Those cards are really expensive, I only have one, over the years I have had several CF cards and have found that it is an inefficient way to manage your photos, a 64 gig card will hold some 1500+ RAW files, so I really don't see a need for multiple CFExpress cards. I do have a few 64 gig SD cards, I just don't see the need for a bunch of cards.

I agree and don’t buy a bunch of cards. I bought a 128gb CFast card when I got my 1Dx2 in 2016. I think it cost $360 then. My camera came with a 64gb card and reader. I can fit about 5,000 shots on the 128 and have not shot more than 2500 in one day... Certainly disk space is much less expensive...

I just thought that I would post an update for those of you who may own the R5 or are considering the purchase of this camera. I switched my video settings back to 4K/60 and the problem seems to have resolved itself, I have not gotten the error messages since changing those settings. Of course this is not a definitive answer and it is much too soon to say that it is a good resolution, only one that seems to be working at the moment. If the video settings were indeed the problem I would think that Canon will update future firmware to address the problem.

Hi....A 4GB document shows up as 0B in the record framework when the R5 is associated with a pc/PC. You can download the total document with the Canon EOS Utility. I haven't seen issues with my CFExpress card peruser (aside from perusing the catalog is extremely lethargic).

Well, in the end the problem resurfaced and I simply bought a Sony 128GB which is a bit expensive but approved by Canon for use with the R5 and have had zero problems since, I simply retired the 64GB Lexar.
