Like yourself, I've been on this forum for a good many years and I am used to folks tossing "crap" at each other just because they disagree with a word, an idea, a concept, a technique or whatever they dislike instead of debating like adults. Some folks just need to GROW UP!

This site supposed to be a FORUM, a medium (such as a newspaper or online service) of open discussion or expression of ideas. I never write anything that is meant to offend anyone. I just state my opinions. My opinions are not carved in stone and if anyone disagrees with me, I invite logical and respectful arguments, debates and other opinions. I don't view myself as a "moderator" in the main section, an instructor, the ultimate authority, or an expert in everything. I just contribute my take on stuff and folks can take it or leave it.

If someone wants to want to toss "crap" at me, I'll just duck, yell out "INCOMING" and reemerge with the same ideas. If I have truly offended anyone I will apologize.

If some folks would learn to practice a little decorum and civility things would go more smoothly around here. It's sad and disappointing sad when a thread that starts out with a perfectly good topic ends in name-calling, insults and kindergarten-lie behaviour.

Just the other day, a member here boasted of his multiple educational degrees and called someone he disagreed with "an idiot". I have a few degrees myself but I go by what my mother taught me, when I was 5-years old, about not bullying, engaging in name-calling and personally attacking folks who just have different ideas.

Hopefully, 2O21 will be a better year! I'm looking forward to it!

I agree with all you said, including the ending:

DUCK

There is a duck pond up the street and over the last year they have offered many enjoyable moments and even a few photos.

Well, I would agree with you about photography but by extension, you surely can be a better image maker with editing.

It was common practice to make at least one contact sheet to evaluate what direction to go in with post processing. what is your point? Where did you read that he and others ALWAYS presented their work unedited?

I guess you didn't recognize the sarcasm "['sarc]"

Yes, certainly. For a minority. Unfortunately the majority consider themselves to be in that minority.

A jpg is just a raw file converted to an image by some simplistic algorithms built into the camera instead of by the eye of the artist.

That's true but so many jpeg elitists still don't get it. I want my photos to look like what I saw when I shot it, not what some computer jockey in Japan thought it looked like.

There are no rules for good photographs, great photographs have just one: the photoshop work is exquisite.

Many, maybe even most of us come to UHH to pick up tips from others and share what we know with others. We all use our own judgement about what we read, just as we should. I suspect we have all read things here that we think odd. Maybe we read a tip that, though it may work for others, for ourselves, it seem just too much trouble or even foolish. Shooting RAW is something that many of us feel benefits us, but others decide is not a good idea. There is nothing wrong with either decision. We all pick and choose from what others recommend to us.

Everyone needs to make their own judgements and plot their own course. I happen to like shooting RAW very much but on the other side of the ledger, I rarely use a tripod. No doubt I have missed some potentially good shots because I failed to use a tripod and I'll probably miss out some times in the future. But for me, the idea of carrying around a tripod everywhere I take a camera seems to offer more of a downside than an upside.

Still, there are photographers who preach the gospel of always using a tripod. It's advice I have heard many times. I don't heed the advice bu in no way do I resent it. It's something I've thought about and probably it is in some respects good advice, but it is advice I will continue to ignore, just as others may ignore the advice to shoot in RAW and edit.

This morning I received an email from Topaz Labs - the subject, word for word was:
"Become a better photographer with our editing apps"
Simply another way of saying what the title of this post says!
That is therefore what Topaz thinks of it's customers!

Depends upon how you read their statement....

Is the glass partly full? Or is it partly empty?

Are they saying, "Your glass is nearly full and we can help you top it up the rest of the way."?

Or, there's your interpretation: "Your glass is half empty. Rather than filling it yourself, we'll fill it up for you"!

But, hey, while we're splitting hairs...

It's "You're a poor photographer", where "you're" is a contraction of "you are".

It's not "Your" - a possessive pronoun - as in "Your glass is...".

Isn't it true that jpeg photos have been adjusted by the camera's software? So how is that SOOC?

jpg photos are the result of the camera settings the photographer applies before taking the shot. So the photographer has some control over the final result. I believe SOOC refers to what comes out of the camera without any changes after the fact.

That would be... RAW

The sensor outputs some raw data, then by basic algorithms baked into the camera it is crudely edited into a jpeg (or heic).

Jpegs are *not* SOOC, they are already edited.
