After my shutter speed error during my last visit, I resolved to do better. I went back and proceeded to commit two new mistakes. First, I set everything up perfectly before leaving home. When I arrived back at Farmington Bay, it became obvious that it was seriously clouding over, but I did not touch the pre-set high shutter speed. Next, in my shooting, I disregarded a problem common to the Sony a7riii. In using the controls, the exposure compensation knob is easily turned. It did move and I shot almost everything at +3.

So the high shutter speed and high exposure compensation on a very cloudy resulted in a great deal of noise. Topaz Denoise was excellent, but it had a tremendous task.

The first bird was sitting on the highest knoll (about 25 feet) in the area. It posed and then flew out to investigate. Luckily, it flew right back. The second bird dropped out of the sky in an attempt to catch something, it then gave me my usual back end shot.

Surprisingly, the downloads are still pretty good.

Really nice, Mike. I, too, get excited enough about what I'm seeing, that thoughts of camera controls never come to mind! I have only gotten two BIF pics in my life that were worth anything. You're doing very well!

Great re-work on the images. They came out good after "making the same mistakes we all do". Was out with a pro in AK shooting brown bears. We got out of the car set up our tripods and shot away. Later at the house we looked at the shots, mine was great, his unusable. I shot at 1/500 he shot at 1/50. My image is now my avatar, his, deleted.
