Lightroom Problems

My son sent me a couple of photos to look at, I put them in my Downloads photo and tried dropping them into LR to import directly from my Download folder. Firstly the import button greyed out but I tried to put them in a folder with no luck at all.

Then my LR just kept freezing altogether and I have to manually turn the Mac off and on to get everything back but each time it crashes as soon as I try to do very basic edits.

Is their a glitch at the moment. Also I cant find my metadata where you can trace pics etc I just cant seem to find it. I feel such a fool but I really am perplexed over all of this. Thank you hogs.

I presume he sent the photos as e-Mail attachments? I use a Mac but the procedure I'd use would be similar on a Windows machine. I'd save the files to my desktop (not sure what you mean by "Downloads photo"). Lr should be able to find and import them from there easily enough. Your description suggests you tried to drag the files into Lr but I'd open Lr and use the import procedure from within the Lr program. You didn't mention what type of files they are, are they RAW files, JPG, TIFF or something else? If you continue to have problems you can get that information from the file extension or by right clicking (on a Mac) on the file to pup up an info box. I hope this provides some assistance.

You might try moving them to a desktop folder and then importing them from there. That’s what I seem to have to do.

It is a MAC & the pics are in his downloads folder.

It shouldn't make a difference but, create a new folder inside of your pictures/photos folder & name it what ever you like. Next move the photos to this folder & try & importing them to LR from there. Are the photos a file format that LR will recognize?

You seem to be quite an authority about something happening to someone else in another country! Very impressive. By the way, how is it that LINDA's folder is "HIS" folder?

It sounds like the files are possibly corrupt. Were the files sent in a "zipped" format? If so, then try unzipping them again into a separate new folder. If none of this applies, then I would suggest that you ask your son to resend them.

I wouldn't deal with email on this. Have your son use a cloud service Google Drive, MS One Drive, iCloud, Dropbox - to place the images so you can download them. No need to deal with zip/unzip, automatic resizing for email etc.

The files may have the same name as some you've already imported so make sure you allow duplicate file names on import.

When Importing with the drag and drop method, open LR and make sure you are in the Library module. Adjust your windows so that you can see both the Finder where the pictures are stored, and the LR app while in Library module. The select all the photos your son sent you and the drag them onto the LR app in the center where all the thumbnails are and release the mouse button. You should be prompted to import them and they will stay in the same folder where you had them (Downloads).....

Good Luck

Thank you so much for all the very helpful replies to this problem - I think there must be something wrong as every time I try to use any of the methods LR seizes up and I have to turn my Mac off and restart. I am sure most of the methods mentioned will work as you are all good hogs at post production. I think I need an expertr to look at Mac.

I’m not yet a LR expert - just got a camera and joined this forum... but knowing Adobe and using Photoshop / premiere often enough... you should try eliminating those photos from the equation and use photos you know are ok. Import them into LR and see if you can do what you’re trying to do with the photos in question... if LR freezes up - your problem is with LR or Mac. If it works properly - it’s something with the photos. If it’s a problem w/ those photos... have him resend or open them in preview and export in another format maybe? If it’s a problem with LR - go on Adobe and download a different version (maybe latest update screwed something up - sometimes that happens with premiere). Good luck.

I am just about to try your suggestion - he has now sent by WeTransfer - so fingers crossed but I honestly think it is my Mac for some reason, don't know why, just a gut feeling. Thank you for your help
