Is it unusual to have to replace the shutter twice when camera 'only' has 200K actuations? Is this a 'lemon'? Anyone done this w/D700 & have approximate cost? Thanks!!

Assume a range between $300 to $500, if someone is available to work on this ancient body. Is any camera worth that maintenance, at any point within that price range? Is buying the same body at $500 worth that price for just 12MP in 2021?

Thank you for your quick input CHG CANON.. .as Paul Harvey would say .. rest of the story... The local who I was about to purchase D700 from for $200.. an ERR showed on screen as I was testing it said it was same 'code' symptoms when she'd replaced shutter at approx. 100k and so then she said she'd check w/Nikon for cost to fix.. just now they replied to her they no fix those old cameras anymore(as you said) but local Calagaz said that may not be the problem(shutter) and they're trouble shooting to see real problem?! Thanks again.. .oh if u're in Windy City loved your town my last visit in ''97 when ran the marathon... Y'all know how to party w/out-of-towner marathoners... Back when!

dasher123 Nikon rated the D700 shutter for 150,000 actuations... but this certainly isn't cast in stone...
What was the ERR code? Search for this, also the D700 doesn't like some lenses... (from experience)

I purchased a "Previously Owned" D700 from B&H several years ago... I was shocked when I opened the box, it was like a brand new camera with only 2,210 actuations... They had rated it as 9+ in my humble estimation is was "Like New!" came with everything a refurb does... including a new strap! Battery was stellar...

Love this gem, it's a D3 in prosumer clothes... and has a lot of nice features that the D3 lacks... with my MB-10 battery grip it's good for 8 fps...

Best advice? purchase from B&H or KEH... they guaranty their products... believe KEH will replace/repair for 6 months... btw, my clients are perfectly happy with the D700's imagery... 12.4 megapixels is more than enough if you fill the frame...

The D700 is still widely used by wedding shooters... it simply works and does an epic job... fabulous skin tones.

Hope this helps dasher123...
Patience please Nikon sold a huge number of D700's you'll be able to find a pristine copy if you're not in a hurry.

Below is my "mint" D700 with a Vintage (circa 1996) AF 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6D Nikkor
The second image was taken with the above mentioned lens on the D700

Couldn't agree more with Thomas here. The "Tog" who shot my daughter's wedding used 2 D700s. Images were great. Shots of my trip to the Canadian Rockies with my D700 are among my very best.

The D700 is one of the finest cameras ever made. I still shoot it along with my D810. Some days I prefer using it to the newer D810. In the time I have had it, which is many years, I have not had one problem with it. I would try to rent the camera from the person for a week to see if it just has a compatibility problem with the lens.

Thanks! Great suggestion 'use for a week. When testing it she'd tried 2 different lenses that had previously worked. Maybe Calagaz(local, established shop) can figure out to see if this is 'the one'.

Hi. My name is Rick. I’m the owner and lead technician at Discount Camera Repair and a member in good standing here at the UHH. I’ve been doing repairs for other members here at greatly discounted rates and would be glad to help.

I'd be more than happy to repair the camera for you and keep the cost as low as possible. If you’re interested, please respond by private message.

Wait a minute, isn't that 24-120 f3.5-5.6 D supposed to be a lemon lens? ALL the reviews I have seen claim that the lens is not sharp and it is full of distortions. Your image does not seem to reflect that.
I had one years ago. I shot weddings with it. Never a single complaint from my clients. In my humble opinion it is a fascinating lens.

Addendum: The D700 even for today standards is a great camera. Its 12 Mp. do not limit the photographer. It is indeed a D3 in a smaller body. It is still a favorite among professional wedding photographers.
Regrettably Nikon will not do repairs on it due to its age and I am afraid parts could be hard to buy. Authorized Photo Service in Morton Groove, Illinois is a reputable service center. Give them a call.
