It would be better if the light highlighted his face and not the boat. Great look about him, keep trying.
I didn't shoot the photo. There's nothing I did with the lighting.

Try cropping it into a vertical which would eliminate most of the distractions.
That was my version. I like to apply the rule of thirds. You can make your own version of the OP's photo and post it.

The pool of light on the wall below the boy is slightly brighter than his face. In the color photo, this is not so noticeable, but in the B+W, it draws the eye away from the face. That seems like an easy correction in post, depending on your skills and philosophy.
I notice the light is not as flattering in the monochrome, especially for your grandson's cheek and jaw. And I agree the image, for me, works better as a portrait in either case! Merry Christmas and keep shooting.
Color is life...Grey scale is flat.
Please forgive me if I am taking too many liberties with a photo that is rightly precious to you. I think it is the definition of the background that is distracting so I softened the background with a blur filter to the simulate brokeh (?) that using a shorter focus/wide open lens might produce. I also brought the mid tones down and aggressively cropped the image. Hope this is a help. It also renders well in B&W.
