The real estate in Japan is worth a lot of money. The cost of building in Thailand is 1/4 of what it costs in Japan. The labor rate is equally cheap. It is business. Economics 101. Supply and demand. Now Nikon just needs to hit another couple of homeruns like the D850 and the naysayers will go away. Many people said the same thing about GM in 2008. BOOM.

For the conventional Real Estate shots they don't care what brand I shoot with, or whether it's a DSLR or mirrorless, so long as it's full frame.

Just curious… of course, I'm aware of the differences between full-frame and "crop sensor" cameras. But, from you clients' perspective, how can they tell which type of camera a given photograph was made with? A skilled photographer will create a high-quality image with either format, correct?

I’ll switch to (insert your favorite camera brand here) after they pry my Nikon from my cold, dead hands. 😩

I'm with you. Two good friends of mine are Canon shooters -- I know what you're thinking: how can they be "good" friends if they play for the other team? -- and we always rib each other that each is using the "wrong" camera.

I read Oly spun off their camera business.

Heard that, too, but also heard that they are still in the medical equipment business. Microscopes, endoscopes and other "optical" devices.

If your pictures are not good enough, you're using the wrong brand.

This 2017 reporting may be out of date now in Dec 2020, but to the earlier question of who makes what where?, note the details in this extract:

Canon currently makes 64-65% of its cameras in Japan, and the new plant will raise the figure to around 70% Mitari indicated, adding that the remaining 30% are entry-level models. The electronics company had previously made high-end models in Japan, and the mid-range varieties are now coming back home. "The technologies we have now enable us to generate enough profit even when the forex rate is 100 yen per dollar," he said.

Did you predict Apple's demise when they moved so much of their manufacturing to China?

Get your arrows ready, although you might not have enough, if you're going to shoot all the messengers with opening paragraphs like this:

Nikon has fallen on hard times as of late as its camera sales have cratered, and now there’s a new indicator of how dire its financial situation is: the company is reportedly pulling the plug on making cameras in Japan after over 70 years of doing so.

Biased comment. You are are good critic, but do not own Nikon much and certainly have no photos published or on covers of magazines. Canon is a great company, but so is Nikon, Sony and others. Why so biased?

Pompous comment by you. YOU of such high skill level with the Canon products. Take a break. Have you ever tested the other Nikon , Sony or other products? If not, then sit back and let others breath and speak what they feel strongly about. You have great knowledge and understanding with Canon, but what do you REALLY know about Nikon and other brands? You are happy to write off Nikon as a collapsing and disappearing company, but what do you know? I am Nikon and will always be (30 years and running).

Canon people really don't care. The most important part of a camera is the sensor and Sony makes theirs. One of Canon's selling points have always been their glass and the RF mount are some of the best. Nikon is probably closing their Japan plants to save money. That being said, any Nikon shooter who doesn't acknowledge that they are in a dire financial situation is just keeping their head in the sand. Nikon continues to lose big dollars in their camera division which can be seen by the pace of their R&D compared to Sony and Canon. They do not have the revenue from other businesses to cover their costs like Canon and Sony. The whole industry has been in decline for 10+ years but their market share has continued to drop faster due to phones. While they can stick around for a few more years, they will need a cash influx for long term viability. With the camera market in decline what is the chance that the big bucks show up?
Canon people really don't care. The most important... (show quote)

People keep saying Nikon is losing money. Is that really so or is Nikon actually not selling as much as in the past?

Since no one on this forum sits on the Nikon Board of Directors, this discussion is all BS.
