Hang in there! My Mom has beat breast cancer and then colon camera. My Dad just had to deal with colon cancer and is slowly getting back to normal. We're all dying it's just a matter of putting it off as long as possible. Collect the "toys" and enjoy them. My favorite bumper sticker can be found on the back of a $250,00 motor home that says "I'm spending my kids inheritance." I think I'll print it out label size and put it on my cameras.
Hi Laughbrian :) thanks for replying, I can't give you all my toys because I don't have any..lol..but I do have some prized camera equipment..or are they t....?

I'm curious about the reference by some members to their photographic equipment as "Toys". I see an expensive lense or camera as a precision instrument, something I take pride in owning, something to look after and treat respectfully. A tool, which I may someday master and produce quality images with. If I thought of my equipment as toys, I don't think I would bother with photography. I am a qualified toolroom engineer and my age is 65 is this just an old fart being picky. Be as blunt as you want. lol

I think it's just the terminology being used.
Hi Sir Lens Alot :) thanks for replying, your message is brief and makes a lot of sense..now you may arise..job done..regards
Thank you all for your comments, I think I have the answer now..I think I er hmmm..whatever!
I always call new camera equipment toys, yes they are very expensive, but they are so much fun, when they are put in the hands of a talented person, we have so many amazing photographers on HOG. Have fun get excited when you re able to buy e toys, there will always be a child inside of us all.
Et the fun begin for you ENJOY :)

My friend, we share the same affliction. As engineers we deal with specifics and truisms. In our realm there is no room for playing around. My guess is that as a whole, your photos are very technically correct but lack artistic value. When you think of your equipment as precision tools you end up with precision results for better or worse. When you can make the switch to thinking of your precision tools as toys your artistic side will start to shine through.
In my case I spent a good 5 to 10 years perfecting (tongue in cheek) the technical aspect and then I had the opportunity of having my work critiqued by a panel and was told my work was technically correct but lacked any real artistic value. Since then I have spent almost 25 years learning to play and it shows. At least when I remember to not think like an engineer. Good luck my friend and if it helps remember that 1 plus 1 can equal a bouquet of roses. :-D

When I was a kid, some 70+ years ago, I had an Erector Set. I took good care of it, and got a great deal of pleasure from building all sorts of amazing gadgets. To this very day, that set is complete with every nut, bolt, girder and wheel intact. I even have the screwdriver and wrench that came with it. I own a Canon EOS series with a nice little array of lenses, and I treat these "toys" with the same, if not more, respect than I did my Erector Set. It all depends on the attitude of the "player", I suppose.
Hi Harry :) thats a real "Swiss Army Knife" of an answer..lol and its the best yet..I think you have solved my dilemma..thanks a lot..
Robbie7, I agree with you totally. I'll be burning 70 candles here very shortly and have been in photography about 64 of those years. My photographic gear is still highly valued to me, including my antique gear. Like you, my camera equipment is a tool, not a toy.
Interesting perspectives: Hasselblad H4D-60 = Toy ???Canon Poweshot/Nikon CoolPix = Toy ??? .... You choose... lol
Don't worry about it, my camera equipment, my golf clubs my iPhone and all its apps are all 'toys' to my wife and she never fails to remind me when she sees me with them. Only things like the dishwasher, the washing machine and especially the iron, she never sees as toys and I would never dream of mentioning it.
Hi Al :) thanks for replying, so there are two of us on this planet eh...lol thanks again
