Why would anyone care about these , now, useless, skills. I think the title would be better stated as “Ten Things People No Longer Have to Do “

"Useless" is subjective.
Many people practice what I might consider useless skills today with video games. Your evaluation of those skills could well be different from mine.

I'm old enough that I could - and could still - do all of them. My cursive writing is horrible tho, even I can't read what I write sometimes. I flunked cursive writing in the 4th grade, the only course I ever flunked although I wasn't ever a great student.

How about the word “flunked”? 🤪That seems to have been replaced by “failed” which also seems to have gone by the wayside. Seems like all kids today are Honor Students😳

Nine. Can’t write cursive worth a damn anymore due to tremors.

Ha, In my little country school, failing was an "NI", Needs Improving. I got an NI in cursive writing.

Same here and I would suspect that most of us can do these things. The fact is we no longer need to do them just like we don't know how best to fight off a saber tooth tiger...

Lol. Penmanship was and is still an issue for me. Most times I can’t read it myself🥴

Same here--I'm left handed and write with a curl so I drag my hand through the ink. Keyboards were one of the greatest inventions ever for me. (I even took typing in HS).

Penmanship was an issue for me too, same for my son who dropped college Arabic after a semester because he couldn’t write it. Now my grandson, straight A HS freshman not only cannot write cursive but cannot read it. I’m still dealing with that. But I keep my slide rule in my office and most people don’t know what it is..

I took typing in HS around 1956. I had injured my hand so I got the 1 electric typewriter, but when it healed I was fine with a manual. Had my father's typewriter from his school days until a couple years ago when I donated it to the local historical society.

I found typing to be one of the most useful things I learned in HS. I'm a 10 finger typist and could reach 100 wpm in my youth (long ago). Had a job once where I took my manual typewriter to the office. One time the power went out. All the secretaries had electric typewriters and couldn't use a manual. I was in great demand that day but didn't get any of my work done.

Hey jaycoffman, like you, I am also a lefty. But in my case, the teacher I had way back when, tried to make me into a righty. She used to smack my left knuckles with a 12 inch steel ruler. I took it for a while, until I had it up to "here." So, I stood up and took a roundhouse swing and decked her. Literally!!! My left hand was so bloody from that ruler, I don't know how I managed to do it. What happened after is another story. I also took typing and to this day, I can still recite the alphabet backwards....LOL.

10 of 10. BTW, stick shift is not obsolete. Thousands of people around the world can use it (myself included) and still do on a daily basis. I hope it will never be obsolete.

I have done and can still do all ten, as long as the various items are available.

The rotary dialing of a telephone is a lost art for most people under the age of 30. I've seen clips of young people trying to make a call on a rotary dial phone and it is hilarious. I'm sure clips of younger generations doing many of these would be as funny.
