I’m wondering if any of your more experienced cellphotography folks have come up with a way to blur the background in shots taken with a cellphone camera. For instance, we have flowers that are planted along the back wall of our house. I love to take photos of them, but the side of the house always ends up in focus, distracting from the subject of interest. My iPhone 1 has a portrait mode that is supposed to accomplish this to some degree, but I haven’t found a lot of success in this regard. I’m open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I've had hit or miss success using the Portrait feature on my Iphone 8+. Most of the time it tells me to get within 8 ft of the subject matter and this sometimes doesn't work. When it does work though, the images are pretty nice.

Basic question. Do you focus your camera by putting your finger on the phone screen on the exact spot you want in focus. When you do this a small square appears on you screen. That is what is now in sharp focus. continue holding your finger there and letters at the top appear. “AE/AF LOCK”. which means your focus is locked in place
There is a YouTube video from the Adorama iPhoneography lady

I did not know that. Thank you.
I can do it and even adjust the strength in an IOS app called FOCOS. The free version is all I need.
Thanks. I’ll check that out.

I can try using the portrait mode again and see what happens. Perhaps I just wasn’t using it correctly.

I guess the short answer here is sometimes. I just have to remember to do that. I know that if I touch the screen on what I want in focus, it’ll be in focus, but often so is the background. Gotta work on my technique.

Do you have a link? Or is there one on Adorama’s website?

I can check out that app. I know that there are quite a few apps for cellphone cameras. Thanks for that tip.
