Glad it was helpful. Do love my DF! Few people expert or not, can entirely fathom the software of these cameras. After 6+ years with the DF, I still travel with the manual, either hard copy or PDF on my Kindle. Most times I'm good, but great to have when I need it.

Way to go. There’s no reason to complain that authors of the big guide books may have omitted the error codes. All users are assumed to have, and use, the PDF manual. Users who do NOT have and use it shouldn’t complain that the big books don’t copy the error code list.

The reason I bought a manual camera (Df) was so that I could set the shutter speed, the aperture and the ISO and shoot what I want without a camera nanny telling no. Beautiful snow scenes outside and I can't find what menu setting to get the camera to shoot what I want to shoot. different lenses behave the same way. I searched menu options. Books don't have a list of error codes.

I have had my Df since 2013, it has never had problem. As you mentioned you couldn't release the shutter of your Df, it may be the setting that is mentioned on page '246' in the owner's manual (A1: AF-C/AF-S Priority Selection), If the focus is archived.

And, What really chaps my shorts is my little pocket camera, a Nikon P7800, does what I tell it to do in manual mode. I got the shot, but on a 1" sensor and not my FF sensor.

BTW the Df blinks ">> <<" in the viewfinder. Still searching the manual to find that one. Looks like exposure, but I contend that none of the camera's darn business. Color me a little agitated right now.

The Nikon P7800 does not have a 1" sensor, It uses the smaller 1/1.7" BSI-CMOS Sensor.

Try a reset and start all over or It may be a focus lock prob and can be easily changed in the menu. I had my df repaired by Nikon USA. It was an intermittent prob and took a couple of tries. But besides repairing it perfectly, they also replaced most of the external cosmetic parts at my request at no xtra charge. If this doesn’t work out for you, check out the Fuji xt 4 which is the camera that Nikon should have made to replace the df. Zoom Lenses of the Fuji are super smooth compared to the Nikon non-pro lenses. The pro lenses do not balance well on the df.

I don't know of any DSLR which doesn't allow you to shoot full manual.

So the df model is only manual mode with no automatic mode and nikons other dslr cameras are only automatic with no manual mode? That is news to me.

Not correct. All DSLRs have a manual mode in addition to the auto modes.

And if all else fails, take out the battery and start allover.

I have a few books. But acoarst I have all the PDFs. Books cost $$. PDFs are free.

But here’s the main thing about PDFs: Keyword Searchable :-)

Trying to figure out how someone who has a df thinks it only works in manual mode?

No, I have the Df for seven years, the Df is like the other DSLRs that all have 'auto/manual mode', the only different between them is that, the Df has a couple set up which you don't see on the others. there are the ISO mechanical selector dial; a shutter speed mechanical dial; plus +/- compensation mechanical dial on top of the Df body, all these setting can be set before the camera is turned on. I use the aperture ring on all my lenses to set the aperture, and use manual shutter speed, but I do use Auto ISO. High ISO on this camera is no problem at all even up to 12800!
