Thank you Bob for looking in on my mini-travelogue in NY and your kind comment - that old door on Bleeker is definitely one of my favorites, I love old doors and will try to capture them whenever I find one. Have a great day - Joe

Great set Joe. My wife worked in a dental office on Washington Square West. I love the door with the fallout shelter sign. Growing up in NYC in the '50s we wore dog tags and did air raid drills at school in case of nuclear attack.

Thank you Mark, yes I can imagine that you would be very familiar with the area and that door picture is definitely one of my favorites - unfortunately it seems to be painted over now - I searched on Google Street View a couple of days ago, it is sort of hidden but I could identify it by the post beside the door - colored black now, lost its identify. Have a good evening - Joe

I used to go to NY to visit my brother in the 60s, and I remember getting some photos of older men sitting around Washington Square playing cards. I wonder if they still do that?

Thank you sudamar for looking in on my travelogue. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to your question - but maybe one of the others viewers here, possibly hailing from NYC can answer the question. Interesting thought: Anyone playing cards there now could probably be a grandson of the guys you saw playing then ... life moves on. Have a good week - Joe

Continuing from yesterday's post, I present another set of pictures from Washington Square Park with the Memorial Arch, a toddler-crew in action with 2 "nine-wheelers", and some structures in its vicinity including a distant view to the World Trade Center. As we progress away from the square we pass through an interesting typical New York neighborhood with restaurants, notice one seemingly antediluvian door with real character, and a church built for Italian immigrants close to 100 years ago, before we wend our way north towards the famous Macy's Department Store on Herald Square. I hope you enjoy our little walk in this area close to NYU.

OUR LADY OF POMPEII CHURCH:
The parish of Our Lady of Pompeii was founded in 1892 by Father Pietro Bandini, an Italian Jesuit priest, in New York City in 1890. His purpose was to establish a chapter of an organization that sought to defend Italian immigrants from usury and labor exploitation. Bandini purchased a building at Waverly Place to use its first-floor storefront as a chapel for the Society and named it the Our Lady of Pompeii chapel. The first mass was said in the chapel on May 8, 1892. In addition to his spiritual ministry, Bandini assisted new immigrants with legal matters, assimilating to the United States, and finding work. The church changed locations a few times and continued to grow its membership. Ground was broken for a new church in 1926 and the present church building was dedicated in October 1928. While the church was founded for Italian immigrants and remained a parish primarily for Italian Americans for most of its history, in recent times its parishioners have included a range of immigrant groups. This is reflected by the fact that Mass is offered in English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Tagalog.

Continuing from yesterday's post, I present anothe... (show quote)

Joe, I really love these images. We've been to NYC several times, and as much as I liked the images I was able to capture, yours are really excellent.

I did notice, though, that I believe it was the sixth picture, you mentioned that One World Trade Center replaced the World Trade Center that was destroyed by the terrorist attacks. That was in the year 2001, not 2011...a simple oversight, I'm sure.

Again, awesome job.

Thank you Rolk for looking in on my travelogue - and I have to shamefacedly admit that you caught me out: of course the year was 2001, not 2011 - I lived there in 2001, in 2011 I was basking in the (rather intermittently available) sunshine in WA state. Simple typo, but it bugs me: no matter how much proof reading you do, once in a while something will slip through - maybe it was the 9/11 that slipped into the year. Anyway, thanks for noticing this typo, unfortunately I cannot correct it, as the correction window of opportunity expires on UHH 30 mintues after upload. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the photos, thank you for your kind comment. The tour will go on for another week or so, keep your eyes peeled - you might find something else that interests you, hopefully rather not another typo - I will try to be double vigilant for the rest of the tour. Have a great week - Joe
