I have a Nikon D40 camera with the original lens kit. I primarily take landscape pictures on vacations via the landscape mode on the camera. Pictures have ranged from crap to awesome as I am purely amateur. My wife and I are set to retire and travel. I would love to upgrade the camera but I don’t want to break the bank. I want to stick with Nikon as I know the majority of the functions. I don’t need all the bells and whistles. I just need something that upgrades my picture taking so that we can make travel books.

If you all think I can keep the D40 body and just buy better lens I’m ok with that if I know the lens is idiot proof. It has to work for the D40 body.

Finally. Can someone please help me with getting tack sharp focus on my landscape shots? I use the landscape mode for shooting and lock focus on the most distant object or infinity. The trouble is that I typically lose focus on the foreground especially when I want some cool flowers in focus. I do not have a live view option to see the shot. What can I do to capture so many beautiful scenes that I typically miss?

Sorry to ramble. I truly appreciate all your help. Let me say in advance how much I admire the pictures I have seen on here. The majority of the compositions are breath taking and you all truly inspire me to be better. It’s amazing how images make you feel better about simply being human. God bless all of you and thank you so very much for helping us as we move about this planet.

Getting tack sharp landscapes most times does not involve setting focus on infinity. You will need to use hyperfocal focusing instead. Look for this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0uMnU1Jpf0

Smsller aperature, better depth of field.

Wide angle lens, same.

With modern cameras you can stop doepwn to a smaller aperature and the canera willadjust shuttervspeescand ISO. Try it

Wouldn't you have to have iso set to auto for it to change.

Keep the body you already have and invest it in better lenses. Also a couple of filters. Polarizer, neutral density.

I will add that good glass makes a difference. The f2.8 24-70 and 70 to 200 lenses produce sharper images than the 28-300 on my D850
learn where to focus. too slow a shutter speed ruins a lot of photos. Camera movement gets more noticeable with long lenses and distance shots. Use a tripod; buy a carbon fiber if you can afford it ; figure on spending over $300
try this website. https://www.outdoorphotographyschool.com/videos/

The D40 was/is a fine camera. But, digital camera processors (like all ‘computers’) and other features have advanced considerably since then. So, I would suggest you talk a reputable camera store (Roberts, KEH, B&H, Adorama) about a more recent used Nikon model with, among other things, higher resolution/megapixels. (Resolution can be important in landscape photography.). I don’t know what lens you’re currently using, so think about that. Obviously, if travel and budget are high on the priority list, size and cost are important. But, the good news is that one doesn’t have to break the bank for a very good, slightly older, excellent condition used camera (including one that was a very ‘highly rated’ choice in its day). Welcome to the Hog!
(PS — Also consider “reconditioned” cameras either from the above stores, or directly from Nikon. Check their site.)

I think you should rethink whether you need to buy anything. Is there something about your current gear that fails to achieve your gaols?

My suggestion would also be to use a tripod
I have also enjoyed using both the Tamron 16 to 300 and the 18-400mm as walk around, travel lens for my crop sensor Canon the 18-400mm is on my 7D2 99% of the time since I added the Sony a7iii to my arsenal .

Also if your camera allows it ,fine tune the autofocus

I agree, it is time to upgrade your camera. Nikon 3xxx or 5xxx series would be a good start. The 7xxx series is better. whatever you have to spend will determine where you go. You can look for refurbished or used. Just ask the right questions if getting used. check KEH, B&H, or Roberts Photo.
Lenses don't have to be expensive, your existing lens is good, but you might want to upgrade to a lens with IS, to help steady the lens. You can look for some older lenses again on KEH, B&H, or Roberts Photo.
You can also find good equipment on eBay, but make sure that they are good.
If you find that you are taking photos at the best times of the day, sunrise and sunset, you may need to get a good tripod. It never stops, like any good hobby.

Your D40 is fine, but you might be interested in jumping from a 6MP camera to a more modern 24MP. The same product tier would be the now current D7500, actually a 21MP camera. Or, you might consider the current D5600, a full 24MP. The change to a 24MP resolution will give more options for processing / cropping and printing, if ever interested.

Again, your kit lens is fine, but you might be interested in a more versatile lens. You might look at any of the DX VR-enabled lenses like 18-105mm, or 18-140mm, or 18-200mm. They are all much the same in sharpness, some more expensive than others, some more rugged than others.

One way to hold down costs on new(er) equipment is to shop used. Online companies like KEH.com and MPB.com specialize in used equipment. Everything mentioned above has been out for 1+ years and there should be plenty of options in the used market.

In addition to the 'where to focus' comments above, also consider moving your AF point within the camera to that specific place to focus, if applicable. That is, don't just use a center point focused first someplace and then moved. Rather, learn the camera controls and the finger feel that let you quickly move the AF point to an off-center position that is where the camera should be focused.

Also look at Amazon, Robert's (usedphotopro.com); there are many, many sites that specialize, including a whole bunch in Japan (be sure to look at their ratings though, should be 99+). I have dealt with some of the Japanese sites and NEVER got burned by them; usually a bit cheeper than here in the US, but downside is the delivery takes longer.

I started with a D60, which has a few more pixels, but the same three point focusing. I now have a D5500 and D5600. My suggestion would be a D5600 body and then a used 18-140mm DX from mpb.com. They may even have some good deals on D5500 or D5600 bodies.

I prefer the D5xxx series over the D7xxx cameras. Having started with an Olympus OM 35mm system, the D7xxx series seems overly large. I have no idea why the full frame digital cameras are so large. After a D40, you will find the D5xxx cameras a big step up.

If you should decide to try another camera, you might take a look at used cameras ( as well as lens). KEH, Adormara, B&H, MPB as well as a few more can get you into a newer camera without breaking the bank.
