Nice images. I do have a question, though. I don't think I've ever seen an image of light painting that included the source of the light. I've always thought one should sort of "hide" the light source.

You have to be more than satisfied with those images. Your technique was excellent and so the images.
If I may, I would clone the strong light among the trees in the second image. Something tells me it competes with the main subject acting as a distraction.

Thanks! Yeah, I can see that. I was trying light up both sides of the waterfall and then concentrate the beam mostly on the water itself and straight in the pool of water underneath. I think i spent too much time on the left on that one. I'll play around with it some more.

I feel that if I posted the pics without explanation, it would still be obvious that there had to be some type of artificial light source, and I wanted to share the technique.

I went out tonight about an hour and a half after sunset to a waterfall about 10 minutes from my house to try out an idea of light painting the waterfall while still being able to show that the shot was taken after dark. I got lucky that there was a decent amount of water coming over the falls even though it has been pretty dry around central Ohio for the last week or so. Being down in a gorge and getting there before the moon came up made for a really dark set up. The darkness made focusing difficult. From where I was set up on the viewing platform to the rock wall where the water falls is probably 30-40 feet and while my flashlight is strong (650 lumen Streamlight), it only lit up a small portion of the rock for me to focus on.

I am pretty happy with how these came out. What I am more happy about is that I have been picturing this shot in my head for about two weeks before I went out tonight, and they came out about what I was thinking they would look like. I was a little worried when I got down into the gorge and saw how close the streetlights were, but I actually like the color they add to the scene.

Hope you enjoy the downloads.

Very creative, PJ. Reminds of a cave shot.
