Bruce, I have LR6 and PS6 but also a D800. If I went to a D850 I would need to upgrade

LR 6 supports the D850. You would need to do the LR6 update(6.14) which would support most of the cameras released at the time of that update. Also Capture One has a version for Nikon at a reduced cost.

I still use LR6.14. I also use Affinity Photo for everything else post processing. I believe it is on sale now for $40.00. Not as refined as photoshop but, good enough. If you don't want a prescription base software this is the way to go. The LR Classic has a lot of newer tools not to mention much better performance & comes with PS wich is what you will need to focus stack. Either way, you will be moving forwrad with your PP.

I'm not sure exactly what would be involved, but I think there is a way that you can let someone else register LR6 in their name.

We occasionally get people asking how they can get the standalone version of LR - LR6. It's not available now, but you should be able to transfer it to someone who wants it.

I've been using Lightroom 6 since early 2016, proud of my son for finagling Adobe to allow us to reinstall it on my new laptop about a year ago, but although I've really had no problems with 6 & feel great about it, today I believe I learned that I need Classic or CC, either of the subscription services, in order to merge together a stack of images. I tried my D850's Focus Shift this afternoon, pleased with results, but of course not seeing the final results yet. I'm guessing that once I use one of the two subscription services, I'll find there are other good reasons to be spending more money, too. Is anyone else still using Lightroom 6, or am I a real dinosaur? Part of me kind of hates to let it go. Why give up on a good product, unless there's more to gain by new?

When you go to 'help' inside your LR software, make sure your installation reports v6.14 at the bottom 'about' entry on the Help Menu.

If it doesn't, sign into your Adobe account on their site and see if you have the software properly registered. There's not auto-update option, but if you navigate your profile and order history, you should be able to access a link to re-download the software, where the final point update to v6.14 will be the install file available. Download and save that install file into your archives and then run the update to your computer(s).

Just a question for those who don't want to join the subscription model...If you are happy with what you currently have just stay with it. But you may want to ask yourself how many features and new embellishments are you willing do to without and for how long? Pardon me for saying but I'm getting tired of the arguing over subscription vs one time payments musings....If you're happy with your current situation great and just go with it and enjoy it. Life is not always what we deem to be individually fair but we are dealt the hand we have or we make our own bed and have to live in it.....Wednesday morning rant over ....;-) take care all....

I still use LR 6.14 and plan to use it till it or I quit. Does anything I want it to do. I shoot strictly RAW and right now mostly bird action shots.

Photoshop CC does layers. That fact alone justifies consideration of moving to it.

Keep in mind that if you continue with LR6 and PS6 on a MAC, you can not upgrade the MAC OS passed Sierra 10.12.6 or the software will not run or give erratic results.

I still have, and use, Lightroom 5.71 and Lightroom 6. I didn't and still don't want to pay any monthly fees to use software. I'm retired and don't want more bills. There are other perfectly good products that are more than capable and can be purchased rather than requiring a subscription.

That's understandable. However, consider computer security, and be careful.

The sad fact of life is that the computer industry moves on to the Next Big Thing very quickly. Apple and Microsoft support only a few versions of operating systems — the current one, and the one before it... and sometimes the one before that. All that means is that hackers and criminals are all out rabid to exploit any holes in any OS or software package that isn't supported, but still gets a lot of use.

Computer manufacturers are notorious for dropping support for older models after 3-7 years, even if they last 10-20 years as mine do. I don't put my 10-year old Mac Mini or 21-year old Power Mac G4 on the Internet any more. They're stand-alone only, with networking disabled. The same goes for the old Win XP, Vista, and Win 7 machines we have.

While we can and do use third party Anti-Malware software (McAfee), we don't expect it to stop everything, especially exploits of unsupported OSes. So we are careful to keep our iMac up to date. The last OS it can handle is last year's 10.15.7 Catalina, so after this year, we will buy an M1 Mac. They have better security features than Intel Macs, anyway.

For the same reasons, I don't use older software. I up*grade* my applications once I know there is a stable version of any upgrade available. I up*date* them as updates become available. Adobe and Microsoft subscriptions both tell me when updates and upgrades are available.

Many of us over 60 remember how heavy industry used to be, where you could buy a machine and get parts for it for decades. The computer industry isn't like that. It churns its gut and hacks up the old machines, software, standards, and support after 3-7 years. It's still changing so rapidly that if you blink, you'll miss something.

I updated to LR 6, buying one of the last copies B&H had left. It serves me well and I have no need to move to a subscription format, which I do not like. I also use Luminar as a plug-in. I’m happy where I am.

How a software title is billed and paid for is irrelevant. The benefits of keeping software current, however, are not. The subscription model is the cheapest and best way to stay current. Nine years later and I still haven't spent as much on my subscription as I did buying my last license to PS and LR. Objecting to a subscription payment system is not even close to being rational on any level. Really.

Hi Brucer,
I've been using the focus stacking feature in Elements + ($12.00 one-time charge) along with PSE 15 for the past year after dropping the Adobe subscription. It has served my needs just fine using a D7200 and a D750 but I have no knowledge about using the programs on a D850 file(s) though I don't think it would make any difference. Take care & ...

Looks like that when my son saved my LR6, he got Elements 2020 with the deal. I previously had Elements 11. I haven't yet opened Elements 2020 & might wait until he comes home, when we'll make final sense of all this. If Elements can merge a stack of six or seven photos, why not? Unless I decide other features are worth it.

Someone else said Lightroom 6 lets you merge photos? I hadn't entirely ruled that out, but I would be surprised. Maybe I'll look into it & try before Matt gets home. I do like my LR 6 and I'm not the sort to explore all sorts of features. When I get to something, I get there without any whimsy. Someone else pointed out that I might get software, and I might, if not too costly, because I am afraid I would end up going for the whole shebang and find all I really needed--at least thus far--was to merge stacks of photos. I know $10.00 month doesn't seem like much, but I'm extremely conservative about my spending, so thanks for all of the input. I was hoping I might tease out some advice, and I see I've got tons of help.

There's tons of instructions (text and video) on most every topic just a google way. Try "photo stack pse 2020" to get started.

Yeah, more than an hour went down the rabbit hole of videos & blogs last night. I was looking into some software program that does it, too. Costly. I will be spending some time at them before Matt gets home so I'm prepared.
