I haven't downloaded it yet, but Sony offers a free "lite" copy of Capture One and an upgrade to the full version for $50 as described in the first chapter of Gary Friedman's book. I'm assuming you have to e-mail a copy of the purchase receipt for the camera to get the deal.

I switched from LR to C1 as well, and am very pleased. However, I do wish that someone would publish a written/printed manual in English. As an old guy, I work better from paper instructions than I do online stuff.

According to many of the YouTube videos that I have watched with regard to Capture One it is comparable to PhotoShop and LightRoom in how the program works, only more powerful. Also a one time fee as opposed to a monthly fee. Anyone else out there using Capture One? If so, what's your opinion pro and/or con? Thanks for your input.

Its not a one time fee, its a annual subscription fee.

Your Youtube video information is suspect. Capture One is not comparable to Photoshop and Lightroom just as Photoshop is not comparable to Lightroom. There are reasons Adobe provides both.

Capture One is, as editing software, comparable to Lightroom -- both are parametric raw processors/editors. Photoshop is a raster image editor and so fundamentally different than either C1 or LR.

C1 offers a cataloging component in addition to the editing component as does LR. Most people will thumbs up LR as the superior cataloging tool over C1.

As far as the two programs editing abilities they're reasonably close. LR has more features eg. HDR ability but C1's core editing tools are hard to beat.

I make my $$$ teaching Adobe software -- PS/LR. I highly recommend them as the industry leading image editing software. Prior to 2011/12 I likewise used PS/LR for all of my personal work. At that time I made the transition to C1 and now do all my personal work with C1. I have PS/LR on my computers no charge to me (employer pays for it) but I spend the money to use C1 instead. In my job I examine a lot of other image editing software and have for example On1, Luminar, ACDSee, SilkyPix, Affinity, etc. installed on my computers. I haven't seen anything that would tempt me away from C1.

I read your post with interest, and appreciate the balance in your reply. I have, use, and respect C1, have cancelled my CC subscription, but, also spend a lot of my time in Linux, so use darktable, which I also like. I am not advocating one over the other, but would be curious whether, as a teacher, you ever touch on free and open source applications.

Just curious.

I do. I teach at multiple institutions and the reality in those places is that Adobe owns them. They are all Adobe shops. But my loyalty is to my students and I will never tow a company line so to speak when I'm helping my students. I often recommend LR/PS as the best choice for anyone who wants to go into business as a photographer. I'll defend that recommendation vigorously. But I often get students who want to participate in photography in different ways from semi-professional to enthusiasts.

A couple semesters ago I had a young student come into class with a laptop running Linux. I asked why and was told Dad was an IT guy and they weren't given a choice. So I helped get DarkTable set up and helped that student learn to use it. I've often recommended ACDSee to students who balk at the Adobe cost.

In the open source world for raw file processing there isn't much but DarkTable is very good and RawTherapee/Art have a place worth noting.

With C1 you have both options - perpetual license + periodic upgrade fees, or subscription.
