Never use Fed Ex again!

We all have our favorites, don't we! I use either USPS, or more generally UPS. My UPS driver knows me, I periodically buy him coffee, he feeds my dog cookies, and it has been a good relationship for 25 years. My local FedEx generally can't find my house, or leaves it at the neighbors!

Stopping by the local coffee shop when you see your driver there, and buying a coffee, is better than buying insurance, for me!

This is a long post but I will try to make it short. I have a Tamron 150-600 lens that needed some adjustment with the auto focus. I called Tamron USA and she told me everything I needed to do. When I ask how to ship it, she said they use Fed Ex. I thought that was ok because I feel like UPS uses most everything for a football. I took it to my local Fed Ex Office, purchased a box and bubble wrap. When I asked the counter rep to borrow tape and scissors, He said "Oh no! I have the perfect safest way to send it". He proceeded to open packages and wrapped it in molded foam. I was a little worried about that because of the heat it gives off. But he assured me it was fine, and "nothing was going to get to this lens". I purchased $1100.00 insurance and paid extra for fragile. About a week later I received an acknowledgement from Tamron and the words " Evidence of Shock Damage" and "Broken External Parts" grabbed my eye. I immediately called Tamron USA and the young lady told me the box was crushed and should never send in molded foam. They kept the box for evidence and a note on the acknowledgement said "Please note Lens was damaged by insufficient packing". I had left the UV filter on it and it was also shattered. Tamron assessed the damage at $278.00 to fix which of course I told them to do it. I want my lens back! It's bird season in the RGV!. I have filed a claim on 12/3 and have not heard anything yet. My question is should I make them pay for the lens and filter or settle for the amount it takes to fix it? Comments please. Again sorry for the lengthy post.

I learned my lesson from an incident with Nikon to double box lenses. And I also make a strong request for the repaired lens to be returned in a double box.

I call it FedUP. Have nothing but issues with Fedex. Deliveries sent to the other side of town, 2 day shipping turns into 5. And don't get me started with their drivers on the road.

I’ve had a long running discussion with B&H who uses FedEx. This is an example of my experience with them. Fortunately, nothing breakable in the box. FedEx=FedUp.

I got an email with a FedEx tracking number for my King Arthur brotforms to arrive Sunday. They actually arrived Saturday. My sourdough is rising tonight for baking tomorrow. I'm happy with FedEx.

My wife does a lot of baking using sourdough. She started the starter 20 years ago and it is still in use.

If you didn't think it was a possibility it could happen, then why buy insurance?

Welcome to the Fed X wrecking Crew Club. You deserve all you can get but there should be an Incompetence Compensation for the often delay also of use of a lens. The higher the compensation the more likely Fed-X will recognize the Fed-X Sport of Customer Football Management permits, is actually Detrimental to their Profits.

Isn't that what insurance is for?

The problem here is that they declared "improper packaging," which releases any insurance liability. For insurance to pay, you will have to somehow establish that you packed the lens as instructed by an agent of FedEx. Your word against theirs won't do it, since it is their insurance. Shipping and insurance has worked this way for at least 50 years that I can remember.

Since you don't have that packaging, it's going to be hard to prove. The fault is really on Tamron, who should have known to keep those materials or to have refused to sign for the damaged package in the first place. In my mind, since Tamron accepted and signed for a package that was apparently obviously damaged, they should own the problem. I doubt that things are going to work out that way.

You're just one person so you won't make them pay for anything. They will do what their policy calls for and you will have to accept it because you can't afford to go out and get a lawyer to pursue it for you.

I package all my equipment for shipment with USPS, UPS and Fedex and have received countless packages from all of them...never had a problem.

Titles like this always crack me up. Never use Fed Ex again!

Something about FedEx:

"Behind it all are our more than 490,000 team members around the world, who are united around the Purple Promise: “I will make every FedEx experience outstanding.”

One person screwed up. By now he's probably working for UPS.

Seriously, I hope it all works out. Since you bought insurance I can't figure how it couldn't.

I totally agree! Fed Ex didn’t screw.up and individual screwed up. That’s why we buy insurance! When we have a car accident does the offender pay for the damages and your car too? Same principle as your lens.

I keep my original lens packaging and that goes inside a larger box with the some cushioning.

There is a famous quote from a famous writer about the chore of keeping things short while writing: "I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time."

Just a bit of levity. I understand how all mail delivery services can be vexing.

Can't advise on the amount to put in the claim, But after filing, if you don't here from them in a couple of weeks, demand to no what your claim status is.
