Success or failure depends on whether the customers would buy your products or not.

They did not fail, they simply transitioned. And there will be a new web site in January. And, who said they failed? You?

That's too bad. Shutting down a site right before Christmas is a bad sign.

No sense in arguing about that now. In due time, probably in the near future, we will know the answer to the question of whether they failed or not.

No problem, you can still get Olympus camera's from B&H, Adorama and many more. I am a Nikon and Sony shooter. I never buy from the Nikon or Sony web site. I buy locally when I can and when I can't I buy from B&H and Adorama. I do not see it as a big deal at all that their web site will be down for only 2 weeks. There products are still available.

I said they failed in the camera business. If you are successful in your business would you sell the business?

Many businesses go through restructuring, evidently there was a company interested enough to buy it. Personally, the more camera companies there are, the more competition there is, and better products will be coming to us all because of it. I personally want as many camera companies alive and well as possible, it helps everyone in the long run. Would you not agree?

Oh I don't want Olympus to fail or any camera makers to fail. But I think Olympus failed in their camera business. Not so much that they didn't make great products but because they couldn't sell enough.
And I must say that many companies that make the products I really like failed. Kodak for one.

Yes, they did fail in the camera business but your's is not a good analogy. Many successful businesses are sold.

News flash! Kodak is still around.

And sure Olympus will still be around. But they failed just like Kodak.

I remember the highly successful half-frame 35mm Olympus-Pen FT decades ago.
Hope they stay in the game -- though I am not an Olympus user.
The competition is what makes all of them "affordable" and the DSLR qualities have reached a plateau where it is harder to justify upgrades.

Seems to me that shutting down on 13 December (especially if it to transition the site to new Oly owners) makes perfect business sense.

Ordering a new camera for yourself or as a gift for Christmas that late in the day doesn't sound like a very smart plan AND they are giving plenty of warning. If you are buying, you've most probably visited the site and seen the notice.

I don't think anyone is going to wake up on Monday 14th and suddenly decide to by an Oly for someone. The only business they might lose is the rare impulse purchase.

If you are going to do the transition, and you want it all done by the first true business day of the New Year, when else would you shut down?

For better or worse, I doubled down on a new EM-1 Mark III. I too am a major Oly fan. After using Sony and Nikon, I settled on Olympus for their size, weight, features and awesome lenses. They have been running crazy sales on their cameras -- too bad they don't offer the same discounts for their pro lenses.
