#1 The shot flows well and tells a story.

I have already stated my preference, #1, just wanted to point out you didn't break the rule of thirds, you followed it. The larger boat moving on the left is the main subject. It's composed perfectly. 8-)
2 excellent captures there...

I too like the first one. Keep in mind that the so called Rule of Thirds is just one of the ratio based concepts in composition and ratio concepts are just one of many other concepts in geometric image composition. You, apparently without knowing it, have applied several of the other concepts.
I use "concepts" in place of "rules" . In my experience these are concepts, not rules (to be broken) or guidelines. Rules are confining, concepts are liberating.
I like both, but #2 shows a closer view of the bridge and boats.
I always have to be different, I guess.
I like #1 better, because of the boat subject, and the horizon is fine, IMHO. That being said, these are both very busy. I have a new laptop, and they seem very bright - is it just me ? One thing I would suggest - if you shoot from a lower vantage point, some of the business will be hidden by the treeline. (See ANY picture of Niagra Falls - careful framing is sometimes essential)
You don't always have to use the rule of thirds to make a good composition. My favorite is the first. Love it.
#1 To me it is more dramatic.
These were taken on a recent trip to paris. the first image does not conform strictly to the rule of thirds but I [prefer it ( like the sky and clouds as a couterpoint to the water). the second does conform to the rules but in my opinion doesn't have the same impact. Comments and criticism welcomed.
I perfer #1, just gives the eye more to look at deep into the pic, nice capture!
#1 I like the boat in the foreground it at an angle shows better.
#1 I like the boat in the foreground showing its side view.
