Here is another alternative, one that I am using most of the time.

I buy a 1 TB SSD drive, the kind that you install in a computer, an internal 2.5 inch SSD drive.

Then I also buy a external SSD drive enclosure case and install the SSD in it. It is simple, takes less than a minute. Plug and play.

Then I use the supplied USB cable to attach it to my laptop of desktop. This allows for heat buildup to dissipate faster.

My enclosure case is made by Sabrent. Model EC UM 30.

The USB 3 cable (male to male) that comes with it is very robust and better made than the usual cables that come with external SSD drives.

Many companies offer such enclosure cases. Check this out.

This is a good way to repurpose a SSD that might be in an old laptop or desktop.

Isn't the speed limited by the USB connection, regardless of the nominal speed of the SSD?

You may look at a Hot Swap SSD for you desk top or they have something similar for a laptop CD rom drive. Transfer is drive to drive speed - when done you can remove the drive and store it or even have multiple drives.

Note - there are Hot Swap carriers for Larger capacity SATA drives

Yes, but USB 3.1 is capable of 5Gbit, 3.2 is rated at 10Gbit and 6Gb SATA/eSATA is rated at 6Gbit which is a good match for the 500-550 MB/sec speed of USB or SATA connected SSDs.

Btw, my newest m.2 NVME internal SSDs are benchmarking at >3GB/sec.

I use two external USB SSDs for all my data storage. Only operating system and programs on C: I've not had any speed problems. I always have something else to do while a really big file transfer completes. Maybe go open a beer. I back up one to the other several times each day. I have the backup SSD on a USB switch. It is turned off until I need to back something up. There was a time when I thought I was working on the primary but it was actually the backup. Not good! When travelling I take the primary SSD with me so I can use it with my laptop and put the backup SSD in a safe place at home. I put physical labels on the SSDs reminding me which is which.

The question is what is the quality of the drive in that enclosure. And the second question is, how are you going to back up that 14TB, and if that drive goes belly up, are you willing to lose 14TB of data. “Big” storage is a mixed blessing - painful to back up and a huge loss of data if it fails. Personally, I would prefer to have a mirrored pair of smaller, enterprise class drives. It’s not as simple as $/TB, but just my opinion.

For HDD's, I buy the quality I want (enterprise class for archival storage) and put it in an external case with a fan (Rosewill RX-358, currently on a Black Friday deal).

https://www.newegg.com/rosewill-rx-358-u3c-blk/p/N82E16817182247?Item=N82E16817182247

Heat is the enemy, and a lot of external cases are plastic with poor ventilation (I used to have a 6" clip on desk fan positioned over a Buffalo case to prevent the drive from overheating). Best to monitor drive temps (I use HardDisk Sentinel, paid). Even SSD's can heat up with prolonged writes...

For an external SSD case, I use a cheap Wavlink (Newegg) USB3 enclosure.

https://www.newegg.com/wavlink-wl-st235-enclosure/p/0VN-0069-00007?Item=9SIA6PF55P8627

I like it because I can leave the top off to increase ventilation.

My OLD notebook, T430, has a 2nd bay for a DVD drive, but the drive is removable, and a caddy for an HDD or an SDD slips right in.

I'm a gonna insert a segue right in here.
MOMENTS ago I just paid $169.00 for a WD 10tb external at Newegg.
It was $189, then a $20 promo code paid the sales tax.
It's Black Friday, getting late, limited supplies.
Good luck to y'all

I use a case with a USB-C, it also has a SATA connector. The independent power supply or second USD connection for power only. Once connected the speed is as fast as any internal connection. For my drive I use a Samsung, Crucial, or WD, I have several which I keep each containing duplicate files.

The case is available on E-bay, SSD anywhere. Never leave any external drive connected all of the time. None of the portable cases are built for that, use and remove.

I use external 5400, 72O0 drives, external ssd drives and I e used internal Hard drives and Ssd drives. 500GB to 8 TBstorage. As my computers has ssds snd a fast processor i select the drive by purpose. Back up is on 5400 HD As time is no important. Referenced images for a Capture 1 catalog is ssd as it works with my computer. None is better or worse they all do what I need.
