WD owns a number of companies, which it has purchased as the drive industry has consolidated, the best of which is HGST. Their enterprise class Ultrastar drives are top tier and would be my choice. What I would avoid (like the plague) are prepackaged external drives (the cheaper, the worse), even from WD. They never specify what the actual internal drive is, but you can bet it’s the cheapest drive they sell. You just cannot build, QC, distribute and market, at a profit, a quality drive, power supply, packaging and interface for less than $100.

Hi all, are all brands basically alike when it comes to external portable hard drives in the 4-6 terabyte zone? Or do you prefer one brand over another for what reason?

OWC drives, especially the m.2, NVMe, and SSD variants.

Get an SSD if you can, such as a multiple drive enclosure. If your computer supports Thunderbolt 3 or 4, that’s the fastest connection there is.

Western Digital. Go with the basic ("Elements") models that don't have the extra software included. That software is usually less than adequate and will waste your time & money.

I've used primarily Seagate for years, but also have a number of Western Digital and Toshiba HDDs. The only HDD drive that ever failed on me was a Western Digital.

I've had half a dozen internal SSDs in laptops, all Samsung, and only one has failed.

I have 3: 1 Western Digital (500GB) and 2 Seagates (1TB and 2 TB)
NO problems in over 3 years of at least weekly backups...
I use the B/U programs that were resident on the drives when purchased.
Stay HEALTHY!

So I went with the WD 5 terabyte my passport. About $100. So far so good.

Keep doing those backups because one day you’ll need them.
