Another lens to consider is the https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1308132-DEMO/nikon_2183_af_s_dx_nikkor_35mm.html, it is a prime lens (it does not zoom) it is inexpensive and B&H warantes it. The advantage of a prime lens is that, in this case, it cost less than a zoom, but the most important thing is that for a beginner, it is the best possible starter lens. It is also much faster than any low end zoom so it will allow you to shoot with less light at a faster shutter speed. It is what is called a "normal lens" for the DX format which means that the AOV (Angle of View) is about the same as the AOV of your eyes. As a casual photographer or beginner it will teach you a lot about photograpy.

That is the 35mm lens recommended above.

I speak from experience. The 18-55 is a good, sharp lens.

I have a D5300 and used the 18-55 for a trip to China. I also have the 35mm. Sharp, good lens. Remember, if you're not familiar with DX lenses, it is the equivalent of a full frame/35 mm film 27-82mm lens. The 35mm is the equivalent of a 52mm lens. Not familiar with the longer zoom recommended, but depending on what you want it's more versatile. Now, when I travel I take the 18-300mm as my only lens. I have longer reach when I want it, but I find that most of the time I am using the lower registers, generally in the 50-100mm range of the lens. I almost never use the 18-55 or my 35 mm sadly even though I own them.

I would recommend a good used 18-140 or 18-105 from mpb.com. I have an 18-55 from my D60 kit, but I never used it after I bought the 18-105. I also have an 18-55 AF-P from my D5500 kit, but don't use that much: the 18-140 is my usual lens now. If you go for the 18-55, get the DX VR II which is a lot more compact. The original is bulky, but also cheaper, and just as good optically.

I also bought the 35mm f1.8 DX which many people have recommended. I used it on one trip and never used it again, so I sold it. It is reasonably sharp but has a lot of color fringes in the corners. See Ken Rockwell's review. He loves this lens but still cannot hide the color fringe problem. If you look at the large number of these lenses available on mpb.com, or how often they show up on Craigslist, it is apparent that they just don't get used. Compared to the 18-55 DX VR II, they are no more compact and less versatile.

My wife used a Nikon 18-105mm on her D3200 and loved it. Used it for nearly everything and rarely changed lens, when she upgraded to a D5500 she stills uses the 18-105mm as her primary lens. Not too big or heavy reasonable zoom range, much better than the “kit 18-55”. And I am sure you can get one for a very reasonable price.

I have a 16-85 3.5-5.6 DX VR lens with a hood, filter and original box in great condition if interested. Very clean.

Yes, I have to go with the 35/1.8 - that's useful even on my full frame D800 with some limits caused by the image circle.

The 24-85 VR can be got for bargain prices now, I got away with paying 400 Euro for it new in a Dublin camera shop sale. I love it on the D800, but it would be a 36mm ( near 35 mm) on a DX. I,ve found it fab on my Fuji S5 Pro, so it should be just as good on any Nikon DX.

I would think about a used 18-140. Paired with a D3100, my wife got a pleasing assortment from flowers on up. She did move to a Tamron 18-400 for more range to accommodate wildlife, but dollar wise the 18-140 works well and won't break the bank.

My walk around lens for my D7100 is the 18-140. Serves 90% of my needs.

A friend gave me a Nikon DX 3100 camera, battery and charger, but no lens. It appears to be in excellent condition, but I don’t know for sure since I don’t have a lens.
I have Sony EMount and Canon EFS equipment.
I just want to have some fun with it, and obviously at this point don’t want to spend too much.
How are the kit 18-55 mm lenses? They can be bought at KEH reasonably cheap.
On the other hand I do have 18-55’s for both the Sony and Canon, 24 mp bodies.

Pick up the 35mm 1.8 DX lens from Nikon - it is cheap - like $175 new, but used you could probably get it in good condition for less than $100.

It has decent IQ and its relatively fast at 1.8 - less noise in low light which matters - especially when using a DX sensor.

It is not a zoom obviously but most the DX zooms are lower quality and really slow.

The 35mm which is a field of view equivalent to 52mm on FF is a great walking around focal length for street and you can do some environmental portraiture with it as well.

It is probably the best bang for the buck in the Nikon DX lens line up.

Hope this helps.

Both of these are great choices. I would also consider the Nikon 16-80 F2.8-4. It's a great lens and gives you a great range for a walking around lens.

Get the Nikon 35mm 1.8 DX. Great versatile lens for the money.

There is nothing Versatile about a 35mm lens. It may a good lens, but if you want something to be versatile get a zoom.
