Nikon D500 with Nikon 600mm F4G intermittent power problem

Just got this lens used from B&H....wonderful lens. For some reason....the back of the camera shuts off...no controls what so ever. I can still take a photo....and view the meter in the view finder and read the top LCD display. Everything else is shut down. Happens with just this lens....no problems what so ever with any other lens. Any ideas what to check next?

Also AF and VR also shut down when this happens.

I would check on how many days you have to return it and get a full refund.

You might try cleaning the terminals, but with Used, joehel2 has a point!

Did the cleaning a couple days ago...both camera and lens....didn't change anything. I did notice that when I pick up the rig the green light on the back of the body pops on for a second...like when you change a battery.

That green light is a busy light. It will come on any time something is connected or disconnected. So it sounds like there is an intermittent connection between the camera and the lens (or between the camera and something else). Could be a loose mount, a loose wire going to one of the connectors, or even something else. Could be in the lens or in the camera, and just showing up with the greater weight of the lens. It would be interesting to try the lens on a different camera, but I am betting on a problem in the lens. Check for some slack between the camera body and the lens.

Have the same setup, a D500 and Nikon 600mm f/4 G and they work great together. If the lens mount is tight, you feel the contacts are clean and you exercised all the switches on the lens to knock out any oxidation, and you are still having the same problems with a known good fully charged battery, I'd send it back.

My exact thoughts. This should not be happening!

I think I've figured it out....the memory switch. It did the same thing mounted on a D750. Now to figure out how to disable the switch so I don't "fat finger" the thing picking it up and using it...any idea's? I sure wished B&H had tossed a user manual in that nice trunk it came with...ugh!!

What does the memory switch have to do with it? Just curious as I purchase this lens at a later date. Thanks for any replies.

Different camera & lens. Nikon D810 with the Nikon 200-500 or 70-200 does the same thing & neither lens has a memory switch. I hit the info button on the back & soon as I press the AF on button for BBF or the shutter it turns off the LCD in the info view mode. Live view it focus's (BBF)with the view showing focus, but shuts off when I touch the shutter button. I always assumed that is just the way it works. You could call Nikon & confirm it if need be.

Good luck.

I'm not sure...but when I set the switch to the center position everything works fine.

Maybe now it seems like play in the lens mount causing the electrical problems on the back of the body....hmmm
