These were taken on a recent trip to paris. the first image does not conform strictly to the rule of thirds but I [prefer it ( like the sky and clouds as a couterpoint to the water). the second does conform to the rules but in my opinion doesn't have the same impact. Comments and criticism welcomed.

I prefer #1, because it shows more skyline, which makes the photo very appealing.

The first has a much more appealing leading line drawing the eye into the frame. Nice composition.

Totally agree with ya Drydock... Some think that the "rule of thirds" is written in stone, but thats totally not so...

#1 tells the whole story... You go UP the river, others come DOWN the river...

Reminds me of the song "Crusing Down (UP) The River On A Sunday Afternoon"..

#1 wins hands down-- wonderful shot! The angle of the boats makes it move, and draws me down (up?) the Seine, whereas the next shot is more static because of the change in position as your boat moved. The clouds add to the motion, and I'd agree that the rule of thirds is only a suggestion. You have broken it to much better effect.

#1 Rules are made to be broken and the horizon isn't exactly in the middle.

Yep, #1 for the reasons stated by others, but it also has a perfect level of activity - just a terrific capture.

Hi drydock, if you measure down the right hand side of the picture no. 1 -

the skyline down to the tops of the trees-
then the top of the trees to the water (at top of bottom boat)
it is almost exactly thirds.
the slight v of horizon draws you in as do the boats and water edges all headed in the same direction.

this makes a very pleasing composition.
