Dear Santa, for Christmas this year, I would like a new camera. My Nikon D7100 is still working nicely, but I want to "up my game" with a newer camera. I have given this serious thought and offer three cameras that would suit my needs. They are all Nikon bodies and, in order of preference, are: D850, D780 and D500. I have been good (mostly) all year and would really appreciate the new camera. The choice of which one is up to you, of course, but I would enjoy it, regardless. Thank you so much!!

Dear Santa, I have definitely NOT been good. But I deserve a New Hasselblad Digital Camera with the 50, 80, 150 and 250 mm lenses.
If I do not get them I will continue to place fake sky's in all of my photo shopped images.
Many thanks, your best buddy.
If you have DX lenses already for your D7100, you might go with the D500 since it has a DX sensor. The D7500 has the same sensor as the D500.
I have two D500's, a D750, and D7500. The D500 is the one I use for action photography. I'm currently renting the Nikon Z 6II and comparing with my D500, D750, and D7500. One thing I can say is that face and eye detection is implemented better. I don't know how it is with the D780. You might rent first to try them out. LensRentals.com is very good.
My D500's are faster than any of the other cameras I own and the Z 6II. The autofocus is faster and operating the camera is faster.

Used to love my D7100. It waves goodbye to my Fujifilm X-T2 and me as we go out the door. The camera is so easy to shoot, I find I look forward to using it. So many main controls are large knobs on the top, reducing the dreaded trips to menu land. I have the 18-135 which is a great all around range, and actually has an f stop ring on the lens to turn as well. It's slightly lighter as it's mirrorless, and I love seeing your image live through the viewfinder before you shoot. Fuji is now up to the X-T4 so you should fine a price break on the X-T2.
I hope you get one of the three - all good choices.

Depends on what lenses you have. If you do not have full-frame lenses, go with the D500 or D7500, both of which have the same sensor. To get one of the others would mean having to get new lenses also. But if you do have full-frame lenses, then either of the others is a fine choice.

I have got the four lenses, but only got two 500c bodies.
I rented a mirrorless body early on and was sure my testing would reveal mirrorless to be a fad not worth all the hype. I was wrong. Autofocus accuracy, IBIS, silent shutter, and viewfinder WYSIWYG benefits are real and significant. Size and weight is not a big advantage (except for the Canon 70-200 2.8 and 4.0 mirrorless zooms, which are significantly smaller and lighter). And mirrorless is where the all the big players’ R&D resources are focused. Buying a traditional digital SLR now would be like buying a film camera in 2005. If that’s your preference from a creative perspective, not a bad decision, mind you (I still shoot film from time to time), but from an investment perspective perhaps questionable.
The grass is always greener when captured with a mirrorless camera.
Santa may be slowly getting tired of your constant requests for new gear.

Santa can give me Gitchigumi’s D7100 and I promise to use it on my old Nikon 18-135. Very easy to please over here.
Be an even extra good boy and ask Santa for the D850. I own that camera and the D500. I only use the D500 for sports (as well as the D850). The D850 is the finest camera I've ever owned. Just top shelf!
