Why do we call it the Mid-West? When I look at my US map the states and cities in the so-called Mid-West look more like they are located in the Mid-East.

Actually, Maine itself is in the "Northeast". "Downeast" is that portion of Maine generally meaning north of Bar Harbor. During the summer when the northeast U.S. is much closer than the rest of the country to the sun due to the earth's tilt, that particular area is not only the easternmost point in the U.S., it is generally pointing "downward".

Yes! Good point. I wonder if people in the middle east think of themselves as living in the middle east. That makes the USA the center of the world.

Just joking around Jerry. I live in Seattle proper. Personally I see PNW as the coastal area of Washington north of Portland OR. Coastal not limited to the open Pacific and also includes Vancouver CA, and Vancouver Island.
