I also am technically a veteran, I was in after Viet Nam and before the Gulf War. Nobody shot at me and for that I'm grateful.

The world owes a debt to these soldiers that cannot be repaid.

If you wore the uniform and signed away your right to life and limb, you're a veteran. No 'technically" about it!

In photo #4. Wow, seven hash marks. 7 * 4 is28 years - but were some of his Marine hitches longer than 4 years.

Note: I did one Navy hitch.

I suspect he re-upped for equal periods.

Since each stripe represents 4 years he may have been in longer. All we can say is it’s at least 28 years.

Every one (with good sense) knows to treat Sgt. Majors with great respect - the terror of young. newly minted officers.

You got that right! Before I became one of those “young, newly minted officers” I was lucky to get some great advice about how to treat senior NCOs. I was glad I listened👍

In a moment of abject stupidity, I smarted off to an SM one night about 2AM in VietNam when I was short. He had me burning s**t in a barrel with diesel oil for several days, and even though I was a Sgt. E5 at the time, I didn’t say another word except “yes, Sargent Major” (I’m a quick learner).

A few of our WWII veterans in the condo community where I live. There was another who moved, who landed in Normandy. I wish I had a photo.
Bless them. We owe them so much.

I'm a veteran too, but not like these.
Mark

I’m a Viet Nam era vet, but never was in the Nam. Others I’ve talked to said I shouldn’t regret that.
