Looking at buying the new Mac Mini or an iMac 27 for photo editing. It seems by the time you make the upgrades to the Mini you start pushing closer to the price of the iMac. If I go with the Mini can I buy a monitor that is equal to the 27 inch display on the iMac.

What I want to see are comparative benchmarks on typical post processing tasks and similar benchmarks between the same platform with the new Apple M1 CPU vs the Intel I7
That would be nice hopefully in the future
I am agonising over the same choice. I currently have a Mac Mini with a Dell monitor, and even with an external SSD as system disk, I suspect it will struggle with Big Sur.
A top spec latest Mac Mini with a 27in LG monitor like the one Apple sells comes out about the same as the top spec iMac.
I watched the presentation, and wondered straight away whether the 16GB of on-chip memory on the M1, which can't be upgraded further, will really outperform an Intel iMac with 64 or 128GB.
Having read the initial reaction from various online pundits, I have reluctantly decided to wait and see rather than rushing in now.

I ‘ve read what’s available on the M1 (just introduced) and it’s a very different device from an Intel CPU. It’s a RISC ARM type processor with 5nm technology, everything on the same die-including GPU. No hyperthreading and very low power - optimized for graphics portable low power use.
You cannot go wrong with the 27”--I love mine.
An old common sense approach to technology is never, ever buy the first release of anything.
I traded my MacMini for the 27, and have never regretted it. Much better performance.
Thanks, thats what I want (performance).

I feel no need to upgrade so do not follow computer developments, But:
I would never buy the first of a new product line!!!
I worked my way thru the various Mac design computers, including a Mac Mini, and ended up with a 27" iMac. Love it!

Suggest review 27"iMac on their refurbished site. Top of line savings about $300; also can add addition memory, etc., so final outcome is exactly what you want. Done this twice with absolutely no problems since warranty by Apple is the same. What no one has mentioned is all Apple telephone service is free and you usually are talking to someone in the USA.
