Going around in circles trying to find an answer to this. So, hopefully fellow Hoggers can help. My sweet husband bought me the 850! Yeaaa!!! I wanted radio transmission, low light focus, etc. However, my present camera, an 810 is used with off-camera Nikon speedlights 910 & 700. Now I know these are optically triggered from the on-board flash on the 810.
My question is this, are there radio transmission receivers that I can use on my present speedlights or maybe a separate radio transmitter with compatible receivers that would make my 910 and 700 compatible with the 850? I do not want to my flashes optically any longer as there are occasions they don't flash. It was a primary reason I wanted the 850.
Thank you for helping! :)
Pocket Wizard are top of the line, some even have TTL
Godox
transmitters and
receivers work well.
That's what I use now and have several of their flashes, all of which have built-in receivers.
They have one of the
largest selections of lighting systems on the market.
You can also buy the same thing as FlashPoint branded from
Adorama.
I have a mix of both.
Phottix makes some rock-solid performers, I used them for years.
I used the Odin, but there are others.
That being said, I have a
Nikon SU-800 commander unit I'll sell for $100.
Easier to used than the pop-up flash on your previous cameras, more features and more range.
Yes, that too.
Is there a way to make this work with the SB-910 and older flashes?
Love to see a photo of this attached to your camera for scale.
Go with Goddox avoid Yongnuo
That works in conjunction with the SB-5000 speedlight which has radio triggering built in.
I use a PocketWizard Mini-TT1 transmitter on my Nikon cameras and mount my speedlights on a PocketWizard Flex-TT5 transceiver. Those units support TTL. They recently discontinued the Mini-TT1 so two Flex-TT5 transceivers would be the way to go.
If you get those units, be sure to update the firmware using the PocketWizard Utility. The Utility is also used to program the Flex-TT5 and Mini-TT1. PocketWizard updates firmware as new cameras come out. Their current legacy firmware has been updated to support the D850. They recently came out with a new "E" release firmware that gives their radios a range of up to 5 miles.
Those units transmit both the standard and the ControlTL (TTL support) channels simultaneously. They can trigger the TTL radios and basic triggers (Plus III, Plus X) simultaneously. I've done it before in a studio.

Usually the radio triggers are set for a particular name brand flash. Many of these triggers will say they are for Nikon, Canon, or Sony, etc. If it says it is for Nikon, your all set.
I'll second GoofyNewfie's suggestion of Godox. I use their products with all of my Nikons and others. They work very well.

I have a D850 and the 900 and 910 Speedlights as well as several SB-R200s. All are well controlled with the Speedlight Commander SU-800. The SU-800 provides the same control functions as the D810.

The OP is looking for radio triggering.
Have you checked the following Nikon web site? It appears to include information on compatible flash units and presumably what methods or equipment is used for communication. I hope it's helpful to you. I've also struggled at times figuring out how to get older and newer equipment to play together; it can be confusing at first. For me the SU-800 was the best solution to use a combination of SB-5000 and older SB-800 units. The older SB-800 units appear to be incompatible with the newer WR-W10 technology. The link should help you figure out what will work with your existing flashes. I've been satisfied with the SU-800 (~$250). Good luck!

Since when are new Nikon cameras not compatible with all recent Nikon Speedlights? Is this true???
yongnuo yn622n-tx and yn-622n have worked well for me with the d850
