Several programs suggested. But nowhere did I see Corel's Aftershot Pro 3. It is all I need for preprossessing raw files. And it does have a cataloging system as well. Might give is a try with a free trial.

I have seen a few posts from people wanting to leave Lightroom and wanting to know if there is an alternative organizer/cataloger. Some say they are tired of paying the $10.00/month fee.

I just tried a few and have found only two worth considering (maybe, but not for me)

One is digiKam, https://www.digikam.org/

It is open source, and free. when it works, its good, but I can not get it to stop crashing. It is SUPER SLOW loading. but then is ok...it has a ton of great features. I do not know why, but it keeps crashing on me. It is not resources, I have plenty and have NO PROBLEM with Adobe products. Maybe for you it might work, if it is all you use and you have the time to trouble shoot, but not me.

The other one is iMatch by photools, https://www.photools.com/imatch/

It is a good one, but it cost $130.00 for a lifetime license (supposedly) there will be updates, weather they are free or know I do not know, but suspect there will be fees. It WORKS, does not crash, and is fairly easy to use. But it does not in any way compare to LightRoom!!

So in short I have not found anything close to doing what Lightroom does. It is by FAR the BEST and well worth the $10/month even if only for an organizer, not to mention all the other freebies you get, if you only need organization.

edit: this info is for those wanting to leave Adobe, not me.

I just saw another similar thread here in which Jerry gives some good links.

I use PS all the time. I haven't used LR in years since I found something better and so much faster. Never hear of people asking for help for this program because it is so easy to use and has powerful tools. Common sense import a and export. No hoops to jump through.

Would you care to share the name of this better faster program?
I doubt that it would entice me to quit LR since it works for me, but this forum is for exchange of information to help everyone.

Why wouldn't you try to learn it. They compliment each other and work well together. If you hate Adobe, you must buy tools at Harbor Freight.

Why the anger and snide remarks? I have used it and know how to use it. I find it unnecessary for 99% of my use. At no point did I say or infer that I hate Adobe. As for my tools, I buy most of them at Woodcraft, Klingspor and Rockler and I only buy top quality. I guess you mention Harbor Freight because you are so accustomed to shopping there.

LR 6 was a one-time cost and did not include PS. Like NCMtnMan, I use LR and NOT PS.

I think that was true in the distant past, but Windows Explorer does support tags (also called keywords) now. IMHO, they are a bit cumbersome to apply but it can be done.

Even is Windows Explorer supported keywords, I would find it impossible to create a filename with all the keywords that I enter into LR.

I do not know what the limit is in Explorer for the number of keywords you can apply. However, the process of adding or subtracting keywords is not as easy in Explorer as it is in Lightroom.

LR6 was indeed a one-time cost. However, after 2017 it cannot be updated for new cameras or computer operating systems. It is now a static system. No new features. If that is OK with you, fine, but I would not try to purchase LR6 now. You can't get it from Adobe, and the internet sources are not necessarily reliable. Can you be sure it will not come with malware? Will you get an installation key that will work? It is not practical for a new user to try to start with LR6.

I really don't want to convert anyone away from LR. I process a lot of images everyday. Edit, arrange, Process, rename and resize for the web. LR would take me twice as long to do the same thing. I never once had to Google or ask for help from UHH on how to use the software. SOOOOO easy. No goofy import or export problems. If LR works for you, DON't change. None of the tools we use are chiseled in stone. I use ACDSee.
What I like is that you edit a lower res image, make corrections and when you save it makes the changes on the full res image. That's why it's fast. Plus when you are editing ( or selecting the images from the full shot ) put those selected images in an image basket. Then save them to a separate folder. The program will save all selected images as copies so you never loose any images from the original shoot. ( this feature has saved my butt many times. Good luck and keep making images.

Dirtfarmer, you make excellent points. I bought my LR6 from B&H before Adobe stopped supporting that version. Everytime I'm polled by Adobe if I would recommend LR to others, I make the point that I like the standalone version, but would like to option to upgrade sometime in the future. I doubt that will ever happen, but after reading all the posts about alternatives to LR, maybe someday they will change. I started using LR in 2008 and there have been a lot of marketing changes since then. Maybe with more competitive alternatives, Adobe will rethink their policy.

I would not try to compare LR and PS. They are completely different animals. PS is undoubtedly better than LR at editing, and could be faster in some cases but it has no organizational capabilities, which is one of my primary reasons to use LR.

So I did not consider that PS would be the answer to my question.

I also own LR6. They did an upgrade but I'm not in front of my computer so I don't know what the last update version is right now.
But armed with the version number I call Adobe, got a technician, gave him the serial number for my disk, waited three minutes and received the link!
Anyone who wants the version I'm referring to, I can respond tomorrow with same.

I wouldn't mind finding out the version. Thanks.

There is no 'upgrade' from v6 ....

The stand alone software ended at v6. The final point-update for all cameras to be supported through Dec-2017 was v6.14. After that, the only way to increase functionality was to enter the subscription model.

If you check your LR v6 Help Menu and the About option reports less than v6.14, that might be what the post above was referencing? Now in Nov-2020, even getting the link to the final v6.14 is a challenge. For MAC users, it could be worse where changes by Apple make the installer portion of the software difficult to operate.
