Since you have them both and can use them side by side under identical conditions, don't you think you are the best one to answer your question?

One might reasonably assume so. But the posting of the question implies otherwise.

Please realize that my remark reflects upon the OP, not upon you. I’m the one who replied “Depends upon the operator”.

IOW “Great minds think alike” ;-)

Your Z6 will give you many more professional options, such as shooting in log, and of course you will have much more flexibility, in terms of lenses and of course the possibility of much better audio. You can expect better dynamic range in extreme conditions (especially shooting log and grading afterwards). And of course you can shoot in manual mode for such things as rack focuses, difficult lighting situations and half angle shutter to avoid jittery pans and action shots. Manual is the only way I shoot, in order to have full control of the image. You won't get that possibility on a phone, at least not practically.

That being said, the iPhone will give you excellent video in normal conditions, with much better image stabilization than the Nikon. We have used iPhone video intercut with video from professional video cameras and it can, for the most part, hold its own in documentaries, just in terms of image quality.

Why don't you try it and see.

Toby, while I have only a passing interest in this thread; I am most impressed with your thoughtful and professional answer. I hope the OP sees this as well.

On a 60" 4k tv.

Pego 101 has defined Purpose, and will also consider posterity ... the life of the work.

Purpose: Too often we chose equipment from the wrong end of the chain. Why for extreme example would you pay thousands for professional video equipment meant for "Hollywood" movies if the purpose is home on a 60" TV. Obviously one would not.

Posterity: Your work will be there for generations to come. One can email to family and friends, one can download to the computer. Actually one can add an cellphone imulator to the computer to do editing on your 27" screen with your fingers on the keyboard that is big enough for human hands. If you are good enough your work will be in the National Archives!!

Choosing Equipment: In photography one starts with the resolution of the human eye, the viewing device ... print or screen, and work back to the resolution needed for the camera. Next comes the features that we value in this case the focus tracking was mentioned. Generally people start with the camera and work toward the output... that is the wrong direction for clear thinking.

The cellphone is now to the point of being a versatile pocket camera that has the ability to be used as a phone. I bought one, iPhone 8+, to get a discount on my auto insurance. I have a DSLR, Pocket Superzoom 1" sensor [with me 24/7] camera that has a 3-ring circus of abilities; why would I bother with my Cell?

Comparing to other cameras, well the old saying the camera with you is better than the one in the closet. Cell phones are with us because they are cell phones most of the time. The Nikon Z6 is $1500 then add lenses, and you have a backpack of equipment... in the closet most of the time.

My mind changed when I viewed "iPhone Photo Academy: 7 iPhone Camera Hacks For Taking Stunning Photos." It was a wow moment!! The Academy has many other tutorials for free on Youtube. I have paid high prices for DSLR edit Plugin; in contrast, there are many Cellphone apps that are free or perhaps $5.
Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZNH8k7JlCo

iPhone Holder: My iPhone 8+ fits into a thin $20 bilfold like unit that contains my cards, has a zipped pocket on outside to contain the old fasioned stuff called money and of course protects the iPhone should it fall.

Addon Lenses:, Add on lenses and filters are not costly as with DSLRs. Full 2020 discussion here:

My carrier, Consumer Celular, added a charge to my reasonable monthly bill to pay/purchase the iPhone with no interest. The price was competitive with on the market price for the same iPhone.

I hope this has helped you Pego 101... it is a new world out there that fits into a pocket easily.

Actually, if you had access to Siri you would have gotten several results for research. Like this one on DP Review.

That was from someone with limited understanding. The reason the iPhone had no problem “tracking” the focus and was able to keep both faces in focus was because there was a wide depth of field and not much tracking was going on.

I'd be disappointed if my phone produced better results than my camera.

My significant other’s son-in-law is a videographer and producer for our local PBS station. He has used his iPhone 11 to produce award winning documentaries for the station.

What I discovered in recording 4k from a non-iphone11 but a good 4k phone compared to a 4k full frame camera is that playback on a phone or a 4k 28" monitor, the clips appear to be fairly equal. When I put both on a 65" tv the phone clips pixelate and are unusable, due apparently, to the size of the sensor. I did not play the clips back on any different size tv so I cannot say what I would have gotten. I suspect what you'll find is that the bigger the playback screen, the quicker the phone clips will fall apart.

Just returned from the Carolinas shooting the leaves changing and ran across lots of folks shooting only with cell phones. To be honest the newest phones give Stellar results with still images. They now shoot in HDR mode and basically in one press of the button produce an image like you see with your eyes. I was using a polarizer and or ND filters to balance the highlights and shadows. I didn't use a tripod much, but could have set up and taken bracketed shots or five photo HDR's blending in camera for the same affect, but they got the results with a simple click... You can go on YOUTUBE and search IPHONE videos and see for yourself what these guys can do with their cell phones. Like most photography it's about the subject and the Ability of the Photographer. Some impressive videos. Cameras have a much larger learning curve than a cell phone. How much time and money do you really want to spend??????? If I was new at photography, I would first, go mirrorless and or just get the best cell phone I could buy....

Yes the new phones are amazing. I have an 89 dollar phone with 3 lenses. Shoots raw and jpeg has all the controls on my D500. A cheap phone by comparison to most yet amazing and simple results. It can be as complicated as I choose or as simple as a touch of the screen. It can't do a lot of things my 500 can do but if I was not interested in bif and macro gemstone shots I probably would be 4000 dollars richer. Lol

Wouldn't the quality of lenses and and sensor size be controlling factors, making the question mute?

How could they possibly be the same just because they both shoot 4K? I like your answer.
